New York City hospital evacuates patients and other health news ...

In a scramble that will be familiar to Louisiana medical professionals, one of New York City's hospitals evacuated patients last night after back-up power failed, the New York Times reported. NYU Langone Medical Center, located in lower Manhattan, started moving patients on Monday evening after emergency systems didn't start following power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The newspaper reported that all 215 patients were taken to other hospitals in the city.

Bloomberg News reported that one of the hospital's trustees said the generators were old and in a bad location. The Guardian newspaper reported that the hospital had eight generators, including one on a higher floor. The patients who were moved included critically-ill infants, the paper noted.

Struggles with back-up systems at hospitals and nursing homes has been a consistent problem?in Louisiana following hurricanes. These problems rose to a crisis level following Hurricane Katrina, when patients were trapped in flooded hospitals for days until they could be evacuated.

Some families of patients who died while waiting rescue from the hot, powerless facilities said hospitals should have evacuated their relatives before the storm. In March 2011, Tenet Healthcare Corp., which had run Memorial Medical Center, settled a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of failing to adequately prepare.

But hospital and nursing home administrators have also struggled during more recent storms. Thousands of patients from the New Orleans area were evacuated to Baton Rouge in advance of Hurricane Gustav in 2008, only to end up in facilities without sufficient back-up power, which meant they lacked air conditioning. Some hospitals in the capital city ended up transporting patients back to New Orleans, which fared better during that storm.

Following the storm, ProPublica's Sheri Fink reported about the tradeoffs state officials had to consider when deciding to evacuate frail patients, who sometimes can't handle the move.?After Gustav, then-health secretary Alan Levine said he believed the state made the right decision to transport?patients out of the New Orleans area.

Most recently after Hurricane Isaac, Mayor Mitch Landrieu criticized private hospitals and nursing homes, saying they need to focus on having back-up power sources for disasters.

. . . . .

In other health care news this week, The?New York Times on Monday reported that the Obama?administration is finalizing rules that will put in place two nationwide health insurance plans available?throughout the country. The health insurance plans, which will contract with the federal government, are part of Obama's health care law. They were meant to increase competition in state insurance markets.

Some insurance commissioners are skeptical, saying these "multistate plans" need to be subject to the same regulations as other plans in their markets, according to the article.

. . . . .

Kaiser Health News interviewed uninsured patients in Miami and found they are not focusing on health care as they ponder who to vote for next week. Instead, the uninsured people who spoke about their intentions said they were more focused on other issues, such as what the candidates would do for the poor in general, or their positions on Cuban immigration.

Americans use more efficient and renewable energy technologies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Americans used less energy in 2011 than in the previous year due mainly to a shift to higher-efficiency energy technologies in the transportation and residential sectors. Meanwhile, less coal was used but more natural gas was consumed according to the most recent energy flow charts released by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Wind power saw the biggest jump from .92 quadrillion BTU, or quads, in 2010 up to 1.17 quads in 2011. (BTU or British Thermal Unit is a unit of measurement for energy and is equivalent to about 1.055 kilojoules).

"Wind energy jumped significantly because, as in previous years, many new wind farms came online," said A.J. Simon, an LLNL energy systems analyst who develops the flow charts using data provided by the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration. "This is the result of sustained investment in wind power."

Hydroelectricity also saw an increase going from 2.51 quads in 2010 up to 3.17 quads in 2011.

Hydroelectricity jumped significantly in 2011 because 2011 saw large amounts of precipitation in the Western U.S. Hydroelectric dams were able to produce at their maximum levels while keeping reservoirs full. Similar levels of hydroelectric production were seen in 1997, 1998 and 1999 due to wet years.

Overall, U.S. energy use in 2011 equaled 97.3 quads compared to the 98 quads used in 2010. Most of the energy was tied to coal, natural gas and petroleum.

From 2010 to 2011, use of coal fell dramatically, use of oil (petroleum) fell slightly and use of natural gas increased slightly from 24.65 quads in 2010 to 26.9 quads in 2011.

"Sustained low natural gas prices have prompted a shift from coal to gas in the electricity generating sector," Simon said. "Sustained high oil prices have likely driven the decline in oil use over the past 5 years as people choose to drive less and purchase automobiles that get more miles per gallon."

The majority of energy use in 2011 was used for electricity generation (39.2 quads), followed by transportation, industrial, commercial and residential consumption. However, energy use in the residential, commercial and transportation sectors decreased while industrial energy use increased if only slightly.

"With the advent of shale gas, it appears that natural gas prices in the United States may remain lower than their historical averages for many years into the future," Simon said. "This has prompted many gas users in the industrial and electricity generating sector to switch from coal or oil to natural gas when it is technically possible, but might not have been economical at higher gas prices."

Barkley: NBA doesn?t tell him what to say

by Michael Hiestand, USA TODAY Sports

TNT?s NBA studio show crew, asked Tuesday about ESPN/ABC?s Jeff Van Gundy?s recent comments on the league trying to influence TV coverage, had an unequivocal ?no? to any suggestion of that impacting their show.

Show host Ernie Johnson did, however, first joke ?that every night, you should have heard what Charles (Barkley) really wanted? to say.

?Jeff Van Gundy is terrific on TV,? says Barkley. ?He and (announcing partner) Mike Breen do a terrific job.?

But, Barkley says, the NBA has never told him what to say or not say ?and I wouldn?t listen if they did. ? The NBA might talk to our bosses, but never to us individually.?

TNT?s Reggie Miller, recalling how he was often fined for his comments as a player, says as a broadcaster now he?s relieved he?s ?never heard anything from the league.?

Johnson says he?ll get clarifications on information from the league ? ?And we want to know where the league stands.? But, he says, ?do they tell you what to say? None of that has been going on here. And I?ve been here 62 years.?

When asked to compare TNT?s relatively unchanged studio show to ESPN?s often-revamped one ? which this season is adding analysts Bill Simmons and Jalen Rose ? Barkley notes the shows are on at different times. ?We don?t go head-to-head and compete against each other. ? We know those guys. We want them to do well. ? I hate it when they compare our shows. This isn?t like regular TV and hit shows go up against each other.?

But TNT?s Shaquille O?Neal, noting Van Gundy?s suggestions of possible NBA influence, says, ?You want to watch a real show, watch TNT.?

ONLINE GAMING COMPANIES COOPERATE WITH DUTCH AUTHORITIES

Companies hoping for a Dutch licence are respecting call to desist targeting Hollanders

The Dutch government, still bogged down by political wrangling on the road to online gambling legalisation (see previous reports) is nevertheless persisting with its campaign asking online gambling companies to stop targeting Dutch residents...and a significant number of companies have apparently agree to cooperate.

The publication Dutch News.nl reports that over 20 of the 40 online gambling firms approached by the Dutch authorities have cooperated, perhaps hoping it will improve their chances of achieving Dutch licensed status. Companies that have reportedly complied with the request include Bwin.Party, Ladbrokes and Unibet.

Earlier this year the Dutch Supreme Court ordered the online gaming companies to install software which would identify and block Dutch citizens.

The road to a more liberal approach to online gambling by the Dutch government has been long and tortuous since a commission recommended legalisation and an opening up of the market back in 2010, and is currently making little obvious progress (see previous reports).

Matt Hughes close to retirement, wants to open 'judging academy ...

UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes has been saying for a little while that he's likely retired, but hasn't officially hung em up yet. He was a guest on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani today and basically had the same thing to say - he wouldn't completely rule out another fight, but he's definitely leaning towards retirement. It appears that he has lost some of his desire to compete:

"I wouldn't say I've closed the door [on my career], but I've got my hand on the door handle," Hughes said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "You know it's been over a year since I've fought, and I've having a good time with my family raising my kids, which I think is a bigger thing than me competing, making sure my family is raised right. So I'm having a good time at home with the family, and kind of, maybe, lost the desire just a little bit to compete. I'm not retired yet, but it is looking like that's where I'm going."

His wife and Dana White had been leaning on him to retire, saying that he has nothing left to prove in the sport. He defended Dana, saying that he understands now that White's retirement talk was fair and he understands it better now after a year on the sidelines:

"A year ago, I was 100-percent go," Hughes recalled. "I wanted to compete, was wanting to know who the next opponent he was thinking of. And now, within a year, it's turned into, maybe [Dana's] right. I am a year older, and don't move the way I used to. I was not very happy a year ago, but after a year I can see what he was saying and now I see why he was saying what he did."

One thing he has turned his attention towards is possibly working with the UFC to create an 'academy' to help MMA judges all get on the same page with scoring, since it varies so much from person to person. He also shares what he thinks is most important in scoring - damage:

"When I'm a judge, I can only help the fighters that are right in front of me," Hughes explained. "I would rather have a piece of a school, or help these judges figure out the best way to judge. Of course, I wouldn't be the lead person. I wouldn't want any financial interest in it whatsoever. But by gosh, these judges need to have some knowledge. They can't go from a boxing atmosphere and think that [MMA] is going to be the same way. You just can't."

"I've judged a lot of matches and I've reffed a lot of matches, and so I think I could help out in figuring out what the best criteria is. My number one criteria when it comes to judging a mixed martial arts fight is damage. Whoever does the most damage probably ought to win the round. If you're on bottom, if you're on top, if you're on your feet, whoever does the cumulative most damage in a round, is probably going to win. And some of these judges think that because one guy was on top the whole five minutes, just because he was on top, they think he should have won the round. The bottom guy could have been throwing great elbows, creating a huge amount of damage, but they just don't see that."

I like the idea of it, but White has been quite insistent that the UFC doesn't handle judging and it's on the commissions, so Hughes might have to work with them. Either way, it's good that he's still interested in giving back to the sport, and I'm sure he has a lot of wisdom to offer.

Russell Means, Indian activist, actor, dies at 72

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? Russell Means, a former American Indian Movement activist who helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee, reveled in stirring up attention and appeared in several Hollywood films, has died. He was 72.

Means died early Monday at his ranch in in Porcupine, S.D., Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said.

Means, a Wanblee native who grew up in the San Francisco area, announced in August 2011 that he had developed inoperable throat cancer. He told The Associated Press he was forgoing mainstream medical treatments in favor of traditional American Indian remedies and alternative treatments away from his home on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Means was an early leader of AIM and led its armed occupation of the South Dakota town of Wounded Knee, a 71-day siege that included several gunbattles with federal officers. He often was embroiled in controversy, partly because of AIM's alleged involvement in the 1975 slaying of Annie Mae Aquash. But Means also was known for his role in the movie "The Last of the Mohicans" and had run unsuccessfully for the Libertarian nomination for president in 1988.

AIM was founded in the late 1960s to protest the U.S. government's treatment of Native Americans and demand the government honor its treaties with Indian tribes. Means told the AP in 2011 that before AIM, there had been no advocate on a national or international scale for American Indians, and that Native Americans were ashamed of their heritage.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said. "And there was a plethora of dozens if not hundreds of athletic teams that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

The movement eventually faded away, the result of Native Americans becoming self-aware and self-determined, Means said.

Paul DeMain, publisher of Indian Country Today, said there were plenty of Indian activists before AIM but that the group became the "radical media gorilla."

"If someone needed help, you called on the American Indian Movement and they showed up and caused all kind of ruckus and looked beautiful on a 20-minute clip on TV that night," DeMain said.

Means said he felt his most important accomplishment was the founding of the Republic of Lakotah and the "re-establishment of our freedom to be responsible" as a sovereign nation inside the borders of the United States. His efforts to have his proposed country recognized by the international community continued at the United Nations, he said, even as it was ignored by tribal governments closer to home, including his own Oglala Sioux Tribe.

But others may remember him for his former organization's connection to Aquash's slaying. Her death remains synonymous with AIM and its often-violent clashes with federal agents in the 1970s.

Authorities believe three AIM members shot and killed Aquash on the Pine Ridge reservation on the orders of someone in AIM's leadership because they suspected she was an FBI informant. Two activists ? Arlo Looking Cloud and John Graham ? both were eventually convicted of murder. The third never has been charged.

Means blamed Vernon Bellecourt, another AIM leader, for ordering Aquash's killing. Bellecourt denied the allegations in a 2004 interview, four years before he died.

DeMain, an Indian journalist who researched the case, said AIM's leaders know who ordered Aquash's killing but have covered up the truth for decades.

Also in 1975, murder charges were filed against Means and Dick Marshall, an AIM member, in the shooting death of Martin Montileaux of Kyle at the Longbranch Saloon in Scenic. Marshall served 24 years in prison. Means was acquitted.

In addition to his presidential bid, Means also briefly served as a vice presidential candidate in 1984, joining the Larry Flynt ticket during the Hustler magazine publisher's unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination.

But Means always considered himself a Libertarian and couldn't believe that anyone would want to call themselves either a Republican or a Democrat.

"It's just unconscionable that America has become so stupid," he said.

His acting career began in 1992 when he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye in "The Last of the Mohicans." He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in his autobiography, admitting to his frailties and evils but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Means death came a day after former U.S. Sen. George McGovern died in Sioux Falls at the age of 90. McGovern had traveled to Wounded Knee with U.S. Sen. James Abourezk during the 71-day takeover to try to negotiate an end.

"I've lost two good friends in a matter of two to three days," Abourezk said Monday morning. "I don't pretend to understand it."

Lebanese on edge after car bomb linked to Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanese protesters erected flaming roadblocks and gunmen roamed the streets on Saturday in a city on edge after the assassination of a top security official in a powerful car bomb the prime minister linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria.

The crisis raised a terrifying specter for Lebanese who fear their country could easily plunge back into cycles of violence and reprisal that have haunted it for decades.

Friday's blast in the heart of Beirut's Christian area killed eight people, including the country's intelligence chief, Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan. It was the deadliest bombing in Beirut in four years, shattering the country's uneasy calm.

The government declared a national day of mourning for the victims Saturday, but protesters burned tires and set up roadblocks in anger.

Sharbal Abdo, who lives in the neighborhood where the bomb went off, brought his 6-year-old son, Chris, and 12-year-old daughter, Jane, to see the destruction Saturday.

"They were very afraid yesterday," he said. "They need to face this situation. It may be their future."

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Saturday linked the bombing to al-Hassan's high-profile investigation this summer that uncovered what authorities called a plot by Syria to provoke chaos in Lebanon with bombings and assassinations.

"I don't want to prejudge the investigation, but in fact we cannot separate yesterday's crime from the revelation of the explosions that could have happened," Mikati said at a news conference following an emergency Cabinet meeting.

Mikati, who opponents believe is too close to Syria and the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, offered to resign after the bombing, but was asked by President Michel Suleiman to stay.

Al-Hassan's probe led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Assad's most loyal allies in Lebanon. Samaha, who is in custody, is accused of plotting a wave of attacks in Lebanon at Syria's behest. Indicted in absentia in the August sweep was Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's highest aides.

Samaha's arrest was an embarrassing blow to Syria, which has long acted with impunity in Lebanon. Syria has powerful allies here, including the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which now dominates the government.

For much of the past 30 years, Lebanese have lived under Syrian military and political domination.

Damascus' hold on Lebanon began to slip in 2005, when former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated in truck bomb along Beirut's Mediterranean waterfront. Syria denied having any role. But broad public outrage in Lebanon forced Syria to withdraw its troops from the country.

The killings of anti-Syrian figures continued for years, however, and Assad has managed to maintain his influence in Lebanon through Hezbollah and other allies.

Now, as the Syrian civil war rages just across the border, Lebanon increasingly is getting sucked in.

Mikati said Saturday he had offered to resign after Friday's car bomb, but said Suleiman asked him not to plunge the country into more uncertainty.

The bombing raised fears that the crisis could unleash Lebanon's sectarian tensions, a dire scenario for a country that endured a devastating civil war of its own from 1975-1990.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon spoke Saturday with Suleiman and stressed the importance of "dissociating the country from regional events" and in Lebanon's sovereignty, a U.N. spokesman said.

The Syrian unrest has already enflamed tensions here. Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims have tended to back Assad. Al-Hassan was a Sunni whose stances were widely seen to oppose Syria and Hezbollah.

Hundreds of Sunni protesters marched in force through downtown Beirut Saturday, placing the blame squarely on Syria and Hezbollah for al-Hassan's killing.

"Hezbollah is a terrorist group!" they shouted.

Police were trying to identify the bombers and find out how they managed to target al-Hassan, an important security figure who traveled under great protection and who likely took more precautions following Samaha's arrest.

"We don't expect to reveal the crime within few hours," police commander Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi told Future TV. "The investigation is like a puzzle. You collect the pieces and put them together in a logical way."

Al-Hassan had many potential enemies.

Besides his investigation of Samaha, al-Hassan helped investigate the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a powerful Sunni figure. An international tribunal indicted four members of Hezbollah for Hariri's killing, although the group denies involvement.

His department also had a role in breaking up several Israeli spy rings inside Lebanon in recent years, Lebanese officials said.

Al-Hassan, 47, who was married with two children, is expected to be buried Sunday next to Hariri's tomb in downtown Beirut. His family arrived in Lebanon on Saturday on a private plane from Paris, where they live.

Lebanon's top Sunni cleric, Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Kabbani, condemned the assassination, calling it a "criminal explosion that targets Lebanon and its people." He also called for self-restraint, saying "the criminal will get his punishment sooner or later."

But many Lebanese were seething with anger.

In the eastern town of Marj, protesters tried to storm an office of the pro-Syrian Itihad group. Lebanese soldiers pushed them away, wounding five protesters, security officials said. Dozens of people who marched in protest in the border town of Moqueibleh came under fire from the Syrian side of the border, forcing them to disperse, the officials said.

The highway linking central Beirut with the city's international airport was closed, as well as the highway that links the capital with Syria, the officials said.

In the predominantly Sunni northern city of Tripoli, gunmen were roaming the streets on motorcycles and opening fire in the air.

The army issued a statement urging Lebanese to overcome the crisis and coordinate among themselves in order to give a chance to the "the criminal killers who tried through the crime to incite strife and split the country."

Better Credit Sparks Upswing in Phoenix Real Estate Market | For ...

In the wake of the housing crisis, many Phoenix home owners struggled with credit issues, and started to pay better attention to credit scores that could affect their eligibility to purchase real estate in the future, or qualify for a loan. Consequently, many home owners have improved their credit scores, which is a trend that has improved the real estate market overall. One of the reasons why consumers are flocking to Phoenix homes is that their credit scores have improved nationwide, and the increase in buying power has enabled them to take advantage of hot deals that are quickly becoming scarce as activity continues to increase.Phoenix Home Owners Have Better Credit

According to financial experts, the trend of better credit scores is expected to continue. After the recession, consumers have watched their personal finances with care, and are taking preventative steps to maintain good credit scores. A record number of consumers nationwide are now included in the top credit rating of FICO?s credit-scoring charts, and are learning how to better manage their finances so as to prevent another incident where mortgage payments are out of reach.

The latest data from FICO shows that 1.4 million fewer consumers are in the bottom rung of the credit score ranges, which is a promising trend since those individuals most likely would encounter difficulty with obtaining a mortgage for a Phoenix home. The number of people in the lowest credit score range has recently dropped to 14%, which means that the vast majority of people nationwide are well-positioned to buy Phoenix real estate.

If you?d like to learn more about financing options or short sale properties, please don?t hesitate to contact me right away! I have years of experience dealing with all types of real estate transactions, and welcome the opportunity to provide you with expert consultation as you work towards owning your next Phoenix home.

Unemployment rates fall in 7 US swing states

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Unemployment rates fell or held steady last month in nine key swing states at the center of this year's presidential election.

Rates dropped in Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and North Carolina. They were unchanged in New Hampshire and Virginia.

The declines could help President Barack Obama at a critical time. With just 18 days until Election Day, polls show GOP challenger Mitt Romney gaining momentum with voters in key states.

Overall, the Labor Department says rates fell in 41 states last month, rose in six and were unchanged in three.

Two weeks ago, the government said the national unemployment rate dropped in September to 7.8 percent. It's the lowest level since Obama's first month in office. The government will report Nov. 2 on October employment, just four days before the election.

Friday's state unemployment report is the last before the election.

Many key states are still facing high unemployment. The rate was 11.8 percent in Nevada and 9.6 percent in North Carolina.

Still, voters are often more influenced by the trend in unemployment than the rates themselves, according to political analysts. Nevada will likely test that theory. It has the nation's highest unemployment rate. But it has also experienced the steepest decline in the past 12 months. The unemployment rate there was 13.6 percent a year ago.

Six of the nine swing states gained jobs last month: Colorado, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Virginia, which is considered one of the most crucial states in play because of its 13 electoral votes, added 11,500 jobs last month. That was the most of any swing state. The unemployment rate remained 5.9 percent, far below the national average.

Three states lost jobs: Ohio, Iowa and New Hampshire.

The number of jobs added or lost is determined by survey of businesses. The unemployment rate is derived from a survey of households. The two can sometimes produce divergent results.

Ohio shed 12,800 jobs last month, the second most in the nation. But its unemployment rate declined.

That suggests that at least some of the drop in Ohio's unemployment rate stemmed from people giving up on their job searches and dropping out of the work force. People are only counted as unemployed when they are actively looking for work.

The national unemployment rate fell last month because of a huge jump in the number of people who said they had jobs. Still, most of those jobs were part time and many people working part time are still looking for full-time work.

Goodness, gracious, great balls of lightning!

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? Australian scientists have unveiled a new theory which explains the mysterious phenomenon known as ball lightning.

Sightings of balls of lightning have been made for centuries around the world -- usually the size of a grapefruit and lasting up to twenty seconds -- but no explanation of how it occurs has been universally accepted by science. Even more mysterious are sightings of balls of lightning forming on glass and appearing in homes and in airplanes.

CSIRO scientist John Lowke has been studying ball lightning since the sixties. He's never seen it, but has spoken to eye witnesses and in a new scientific paper, he gives the first mathematical solution explaining the birth of ball lightning -- and how it can pass through glass.

Previous theories have cited microwave radiation from thunderclouds, oxidizing aerosols, nuclear energy, dark matter, antimatter, and even black holes as possible causes. Lowke disputes these theories.

He proposes ball lightning is caused when leftover ions (electric energy), which are very dense, are swept to the ground following a lightning strike. As for how they pass through glass, he says this is a result of a stream of ions accumulating on the outside of a glass window and the resulting electric field on the other side excites air molecules to form a ball discharge.

According to Lowke ball lightning is rare, but it has been witnessed in Australia many times. People just don't realize what it is when they see it.

IBM Takes a Big Data Approach to Security - NYTimes.com

Companies will spend an estimated $50 billion on computer security this year, but they are not feeling particularly secure these days.

Blame innovation, if you like. Every big digital advance opens the door to both opportunity and mischief. Smartphones, cloud computing and the data explosion promise a revolution in communications, cost-savings and knowledge discovery. But those three trends in technology also create security headaches.

John Meakin, the global head of security for Deutsche Bank, speaks of the rising tempo and sophistication of security threats, and how applications delivered over the Internet and mobile devices take sensitive data beyond the traditional security stronghold ? the ?fortress firewall,? he calls it.

What is needed, according to Mr. Meakin, is a smart ?always-on, listening widely? tool to detect emerging security threats ? typically software bots intent on pilfering information and committing fraud.

I.B.M. is moving to provide the kind of digital security sentinel the Deutsche Bank security chief has in mind.

The company is making a bundle of product announcements on Thursday that address the security challenges of mobile, cloud and Big Data computing, and I.B.M. is applying its own data analysis expertise to attack the data-security problem.

The key, said Steven A. Mills, senior vice president in charge of I.B.M.?s software business, is technology that constantly monitors all kinds of data flowing into and out of a company and looks for unusual activity, or ?threat patterns.?

?Security today is a real-time Big Data challenge,? Mr. Mills said.

The I.B.M. offerings are mainly monitoring software for data flows to and from mobile devices, remote data centers and programs built with Hadoop, the underlying software for many Big Data applications.

The products are the result of years of I.B.M. investment and several recent acquisitions, notably Q1 Labs, a private company based in Waltham, Mass., that I.B.M. bought last year. With the Q1 deal, I.B.M. set up a separate security division, and Q1?s chief executive, Brendan Hannigan, became general manager of the security business.

Equifax, a large credit reporting agency, started working with Q1 shortly before it was bought by I.B.M. With 572 million consumer records in its data centers, Equifax must stay at the leading edge of security technology, said Tony Spinelli, its chief security officer. He said security was a never-ending race to stay ahead of modern hackers, whom he called ?artful and creative guys.?

The appeal of I.B.M.?s strategy, Mr. Spinelli said, is that it focuses on ?security intelligence.? The traditional approach to security, he explained, has focused on ?detection and reaction.? But today, he added, the need is for automated tools that mine data flows to spot threats and issue alerts to security professionals.

I.B.M.?s moves reflect how the computer security business is evolving, said Jon Oltsik, an analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group, a research firm. The industry, he said, has long been dominated by niche companies that focused on specific products, like virus software or firewalls. But the rising complexity of computing, and of security threats, is prompting a consolidation ? and a need for products and services that span the spectrum of security threats companies face.

I.B.M., Mr. Oltsik said, is one of the few companies that has both the technology expertise and broad reach to be a winner. Other candidates, he said, include Hewlett-Packard, McAfee, Symantec and perhaps Cisco.

?This massive series of announcements shows that I.B.M. is executing on its security vision,? Mr. Oltsik said.

Stand-up: Obama and Romney draw laughs at dinner

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney scored big laughs at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner, an annual fundraiser at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel for Catholic charitable work that has drawn presidential candidates since World War II.

A sampling of the best quips from their stand-up routines:

___

"I had a lot more energy in our second debate. I felt really well-rested after the nice long nap I had in first debate." ? Obama, poking fun at his poor performance in the first nationally televised debate against Romney.

___

"As President Obama surveys the Waldorf banquet room, with everyone in white tie and finery, you have to wonder what he's thinking: 'So little time. So much to redistribute.'" ? Romney, riffing on conservative complaints that Obama wants to redistribute the wealth.

___

"In less than three weeks, voters in states like Ohio, Virginia and Florida will decide this incredibly important election. Which begs the question: What are we doing here?" ? Obama, on spending valuable campaigning time in solidly Democratic New York.

___

"Find the biggest available straw man and then mercilessly attack him. Big Bird didn't see it coming. By the way, in the spirit of 'Sesame Street' tonight, the president's remarks tonight are brought to you by the letter 'O' and the number 16 trillion." ? Romney, on how he prepares for debates, his own plan to defund public television and the national debt.

___

"Earlier today I went shopping at some stores in Midtown. I understand Gov. Romney went shopping for some stores in Midtown." ? Obama, on Romney's vast wealth.

___

"President Obama and I are each very lucky to have one person who's always in our corner. Someone who we can lean on and is someone who is a comforting presence without whom we wouldn't be able to go another day. I have my beautiful wife, Ann, and he has Bill Clinton." ? Romney, teasing about the former president's prominent role in Obama's campaign.

___

"After my foreign trip in 2008, I was attacked as a celebrity because I was so popular with our allies overseas. I have to say, I'm impressed by how well Gov. Romney has avoided that problem." ? Obama, on Romney's trip to Europe and the Middle East last summer, which drew critical headlines.

___

"I've already seen early reports from tonight's dinner. Headline: 'Obama embraced by Catholics. Romney dines with rich people.'" ? Romney, on media bias against his candidacy.

Color Your Plate Healthy

A healthy breakfast packed with protein and veggies.

It must be Mother Nature?s way of encouraging us to eat healthfully. It?s pretty simple, actually, and well, just plain pretty. What is it? A plate filled with colorful food items.

You may have never noticed, but when you fill up your plate with your favorite food item, your plate tends to be pretty one dimensional and just one color.

Take, for example, a plate of pasta. By itself, it looks boring and bland. But if you add tomato sauce, meatballs and a green salad to your meal, that dish of pasta becomes not only more visually appealing, but also more nutritious because you?re getting different kinds of vitamins from various food sources.

Want more ideas on how to add splashes of color on your plate?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture?s ChooseMyPlate.gov offers the following suggestions to build a healthy plate:

Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables.

  • Eat red, orange, and dark-green vegetables, such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes and broccoli, in main and side dishes.
  • Eat fruit, vegetables, or unsalted nuts as snacks ? they are nature?s original fast foods.

?Switch to skim or 1% milk.

  • They have the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but less fat and calories.
  • Try calcium-fortified soy products as an alternative to dairy foods.

?Make at least half your grains whole.

  • Choose 100% whole-grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice and pasta.
  • Check the ingredients list on food packages to find whole-grain foods.

Vary your protein food choices.

  • Twice a week, make seafood the protein on your plate.
  • Eat beans, which are a natural source of fiber and protein.
  • Keep meat and poultry portions small and lean.

Other sources of protein include eggs and cheese. Eggs contain vitamin D, selenium (important to the immune system), vitamin B2 (helps promote healthy growth and tissue repair) and vitamin B12 (needed to make blood cells).

The following information from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gives you an idea of just how nutritious a colorful plate of food can be, broken out by health benefit and color:

Foods that contain fiber ? beneficial effects include decreased risk of coronary artery disease

  • Green: artichokes, lima beans, soy beans, split peas
  • Cream: black-eyed peas, chick peas, navy beans, white beans
  • Brown: pinto beans

Foods with potassium ? may help to maintain a healthy blood pressure

  • Cream: white beans, white potatoes
  • Green: beet greens, cooked greens, lima beans
  • Orange: carrot juice, sweet potatoes
  • Red: tomato paste, tomato puree
  • Purple: prune juice

Foods with vitamin A ? keeps skin and eyes healthy and helps to protect against infections

  • Green: Chinese cabbage, collard greens, kale, mustard greens, spinach, turnip greens
  • Orange: cantaloupe, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, winter squash
  • Red: Red peppers

Foods with vitamin C ? helps heals cuts and wounds and keep teeth and gums healthy

  • Cream: cauliflower
  • Green: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, green peppers, kale, kiwi
  • Orange: cantaloupe, oranges, sweet potatoes
  • Red: red peppers, strawberries, tomato juice
  • Yellow: mango, pineapple

French President Promises to Ban Homework as Part of Educational Initiatives

French President Francois Hollande stands at the Elysee Palace on October 10, 2012 in Paris, France.

Getty Images

French President Francois Hollande at the ?lys?e Palace, in Paris, on Oct. 10, 2012

If he manages to push his latest proposals through, French President Fran?ois Hollande may find himself with a few more young supporters on his side.

Last week, Hollande reaffirmed his pledge to make education one of his main domestic priorities by outlining key strategic changes to revitalize France?s school system. It?s a sweeping package of changes meant to reform a system critics claim is outdated and inefficient, but for headline writers it boils down to one concept: the French President wants to outlaw homework. ?Work should be done at school, rather than at home,? Hollande?emphasized on Wednesday.

(MORE: French President Hollande Embarks on His Own Mission Impossible)

He also proposes reducing the average amount of time a student spends in class in each day, while stretching the school week from four days to four and a half. It?s a bid to bring the country more in line with international standards and to acknowledge some of the current system?s shortcomings. Even the homework isn?t just an empty populist gesture ? it?s meant to reflect the fact that many of the lowest-performing students lack a positive support environment at home.

According to the Associated Press, French students endure some of the longest school days within developed nations:

Despite long summer breaks and the four-day school week, French elementary school students actually spend more hours per year in school than average ? 847, compared with 774 among countries in OECD, a club of wealthy nations. But the time is compressed into fewer days each year. The French school day begins around 8:30 [a.m.] and ends at 4:30 p.m., even for the youngest, despite studies showing the ability of young children to learn deteriorates as the day goes on.

However, Hollande?s proposal faces a few challenges of its own: parents would have to learn how to adjust to the new school schedule and how best to care for their child during their suddenly free afternoons. Extracurricular activities would potentially fill a gap, but would increase pressure on already strained educational and state budgets.

(MORE: France Needs $43 Billion to Meet Debt Targets ? but Rejects Aust?rit?)

?It?s completely unrealistic,? Val?rie Marty, the president of France?s national parents? organization, told the Associated Press. ?They have to figure out who will take care of the children after school, who will finance it.?

Some of Hollande?s other suggestions: shortening students? summer vacation, increasing the number of teachers by as many as 60,000 and targeting disadvantaged areas to bolster France?s school system. Given the additional pressure the President faces in reforming the domestic budget, it?s a tough act to pull off.

Hollande, who is currently in his first term after succeeding Nicolas Sarkozy in May, had vowed to make education a cornerstone of his presidency.

Online Auction Site Growth

In hard economic times, a lot of people are looking to reduce their monthly outgoings in what ever way they can. Some things simply can not be helped, such as car insurance. The reality is though a lot of the every day products and services that we buy are not necessarily being purchased at a good price. Instead, the majority of people pay over the odds from local retailers, simply because this seems like the sensible and easiest option.

The reality is that internet shopping is bigger now than it has ever been before and there is a very good reason for this; it is cheaper! Buying online represents the best way to get the very best deals. The competition online with e-commerce websites and online auction sites is huge, which means retailers are constantly slashing their prices. Obviously this represents a great deal for the consumer, who manages to get products at hugely discounted prices, without a valid reason!

There are two different ways to buy on standard online auction sites; bidding and buy it now. The bidding option is the one that yields some great savings. Those that are looking to bid will generally look for savings of around 30% on the retail price of an item, but upwards of 50% for brand new items. Many of the buy it now auctions allow people to pick up deals on items, with discounts of 15% or more. The great thing about buy it now auctions is that there is no hanging around; the buyer can purchase the item immediately.

Here is the good thing; there are plenty of other online auction sites on offer. For instance, there are many new auction sites that offer what is known as a reverse auction. This is where the individual bidders pay to bid on each individual auction. This fee will go to the auctioneer, but it means that the bidder will have a chance of getting products for ridiculously low rates. The majority of reverse auction websites will allow people to get savings of up to 90%. Obviously, these types of savings are not standard and therefore, they are not likely to be found anywhere else.

Having some kind of strategy when entering online auctions sites, with a reverse format, is going to be a wise decision. They are certainly not easy auctions to win and there are plenty of other people thinking that they can also win them. Obviously the less popular items will attract fewer bids and generally, these are the items to go for. Less bids means a greater chance of actually winning, so starting the process with these will be good. Over time and as your level of experience develops, each individual will get an idea of what to look for and what auctions they are most likely to win.

A lot of people now use standard auctions for every day purchases, but use reverse auctions as almost a way of leisure. They have fun when bidding thanks to the excitement, but when they actually win, they save hundreds of pounds!

The BidGrid auction site is different, the lowest bid wins and they have zero risk bidding. See how it works.

Hunting Gifts

Basic gear that every hunter should have to make every hunting adventure safe and comfortable.

Hunting Knife
Outside of your firearm or weapon a well made hunting knife is at the top of my list for must haves in hunting gear. Hunting knives are available in a wide range of brands and styles. Choose a knife that fits your individual needs. Many hunters carry more than one knife, usually a larger fixed blade hunting knife for big game and survival use and a folding pocket knife for smaller tasks.

Hunting Clothing
Comfortable and highly functional outdoor clothing that will protect you from the elements and keep you warm and dry. Hunting coat or jacket, hunting overalls, thermal underwear for cold weather use, hunting hat, gloves for hunting, hunting socks and hunting boots suitable for the terrain and weather.

Pocket Lighter and Fire Starters
If you hunt in remote areas or spend extended periods outdoors a dependable way of starting a fire if needed is an absolute must. There are times when your clothing becomes wet or you may become lost that a fire is necessary. Waterproof matches and a small pocket lighter and a small amount of paper come in handy for starting fires. If you find yourself in a survival situation outdoors being able to start a fire when needed can save your life. I personally carry a Zippo pocket lighter, a small Bic butane lighter and waterproof matches at all times.

Canteens and Water Bottles
Hunters that walk long distances can become dehydrated very quickly. Canteens and water bottles provide you with an excellent way to stay hydrated. Remeber that a person can live weeks without food but only a number of days without water.

Trail Foods for Hunters
Spending time in the outdoors can make you work up quite an appetite. I found that carrying a small amount of beef jerky or a couple of power energy bars can do wonders for those hunger pains. Recipe for Homemade Beef Jerky

NYCC 2012: Dark Horse Comic's M Press Books Set to Produce The ...

Dark Horse imprint, M Press Books, is set to produce the graphic novel of the upcoming feature film, The Fifth Beatle! Check out the press release below!

VIVEK J. TIWARY SET TO WRITE AND PRODUCE FEATURE FILM ADAPTATION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL THE FIFTH BEATLE

First feature film about The Beatles to secure music rights to their songs

New York, NEW YORK (October 10, 2012) ? Award-winning producer and writer, Vivek J. Tiwary, is set to write and produce a feature film adaptation of his upcoming graphic novel, THE FIFTH BEATLE, which chronicles the life of The Beatles little-known manager, Brian Epstein. As Paul McCartney said, ?If anyone was the Fifth Beatle, it was Brian.? This groundbreaking project also marks the first time a feature film about the band has ever secured rights to include Beatles songs.

Tiwary has signed a deal with Sony/ATV (who control the Lennon/McCartney music catalog) which gives him unprecedented access to Beatles songs for the film.

The graphic novel, THE FIFTH BEATLE, is being written by Tiwary and drawn by fan-favorite artist Andrew Robinson (STAR WARS, BATMAN, SUPERMAN) with additional contributions by multiple Eisner and Harvey award-winning artist Kyle Baker (PLASTIC MAN, WHY I HATE SATURN, NAT TURNER). It is slated to be published in 2013. Both Robinson and Tiwary will attend the upcoming New York Comic Con from October 10th-14th to present the graphic novel and meet fans. Artwork from the novel will be exclusively displayed online at www.thefifthbeatle.com.

On Wednesday, October 10 at 7pm, Tiwary and Robinson will appear on the panel ?A Celebration of Pop Music Comics? at Jim Hanley?s Universe store. They will then sign exclusive artwork from THE FIFTH BEATLE at New York Comic Con?s Dark Horse booth at the Javitz Center on Friday, October 12th at 5pm.

THE FIFTH BEATLE from M Press Books, a division of Dark Horse Comics, recounts the untold true story of Epstein, the brilliant visionary who discovered The Beatles and helped guide the band to international stardom as their manager, securing their first record deal at a time when no one else was interested, and successfully bringing them to the world stage with a scale and scope no music impresario had ever attempted.

Epstein?s boast??The Beatles will be bigger than Elvis!?? seemed absurd in 1961, but proved humbly prophetic by 1967.?When he died at the age of 32, he was an extremely successful artist manager and entertainment impresario, but a painfully lonely young man.? The film will deal with Epstein?s struggles with his sexuality and religion, while desperately trying to fit into the ?Fab Four?s? world.

?My interest in the Brian Epstein story began almost 20 years ago, when I decided that music management was the area of the entertainment industry that I first wanted to pursue,? says Vivek.? ? I had been a lifelong Beatles fan, so I thought that it made sense to study the management of the band that had written the rules of the modern music industry. ?What I unearthed after much research (there is a paltry amount of information readily available on Brian, which is part of why I want to bring his story to the world) was not just an inspirational business story and a blueprint for what I wanted to accomplish with my career, but also a very human story. This is a true labor of love, passion project for me.?

Tiwary is represented by David Alpert and Lawrence Mattis at Circle of Confusion.
