Hawaii lieutenant gov. picked to fill Senate seat

HONOLULU (AP) ? Hawaii's lieutenant governor and former head of President Barack Obama's 2008 election effort there has been named the state's newest U.S. senator, a choice that went against the dying wish of revered longtime Sen. Daniel Inouye.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed Brian Schatz to the post Wednesday, instead of Inouye choice U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa.

The 40-year-old Schatz, a former state representative and onetime chairman of the state Democratic Party, said his top priorities would be addressing global climate change, preserving federal funds used in Hawaii for things like defense spending and transportation, and getting federal recognition for Native Hawaiians for forming their own government, similar to many Indian tribes.

Schatz, who ran with Abercrombie for the state's top two offices in 2010, beat out Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The three candidates were selected by state Democrats Wednesday morning from a field of 14. The candidates briefly made their cases before the state party's central committee.

"No one can fill Sen. Daniel K. Inouye's shoes, but what we want to do today is find the right person to walk in his footsteps," Schatz told the committee.

"I want to be your senator because I believe Hawaii needs seniority, and we need someone who can build it up over decades and decades. And I pledge to you, if I'm given this opportunity and obligation to serve, I will try to make this my life's work and rebuild the tenure that Hawaii so desperately needs," he said.

Schatz flew to Washington Wednesday night with Obama aboard Air Force One, who was returning from his Hawaii Christmas vacation early as Congress considers what to do about the so-called fiscal cliff.

Schatz was expected to be sworn in on Thursday, becoming Hawaii's senior senator. The state's other senator, Daniel Akaka, is retiring at the end of this Congress after 22 years.

Even before winning the 2010 general election, Abercrombie expressed faith in Schatz, saying he would put him in charge of attracting more private and federal investment in Hawaii. Other responsibilities included leading the state's clean energy efforts and Asia-Pacific relations.

"To the people of Hawaii, I can assure you this: I will give every fiber of my being to doing a good job for the state of Hawaii," Schatz told a news conference in Honolulu. "We have a long and perhaps difficult road ahead of us, but we can succeed if we work together. I understand the magnitude of this obligation and this honor, and I won't let you down."

Inouye, by far Hawaii's most influential politician and one of the most respected lawmakers in Washington after serving five decades in the Senate, died last week of respiratory complications at the age of 88. He sent Abercrombie a hand-signed letter dated the day he died, saying he would like Hanabusa to succeed him, calling it his "last wish."

Four days after eulogizing Inouye in the courtyard of the Hawaii Capitol, Abercrombie said he had to consider more than just Inouye's wishes in filling his seat.

"Of course Sen. Inouye's views and his wishes were taken into account fully, but the charge of the central committee, and by extension then myself as governor, was to act in the best interests of the party ... the state and the nation," Abercrombie said.

"The law makes explicitly clear, as do the rules of the Democratic Party, that while everyone's voice is heard and everyone's view is taken into account, nonetheless, no one and nothing is preordained."

Under state law, the successor had to come from the same party as the prior incumbent. An Abercrombie spokeswoman said the governor did not feel any political pressure from within his party to make the choice he made.

"While we are very disappointed that it was not honored, it was the governor's decision to make," Jennifer Sabas, Inouye's chief of staff, said in a statement. "We wish Brian Schatz the best of luck."

Selecting Hanabusa, 61, would have required a special election in Hawaii's 1st Congressional District. Last time that happened, Hanabusa lost to Republican Charles Djou because of a winner-take-all format that split votes between Democrats.

Abercrombie said the possibility of a special election was a factor, as well as Hanabusa's "key position" on the House Armed Services Committee. The governor said she was on her way toward establishing a senior position on that panel, and it's important for Hawaii ? with its four-member delegation ? to establish seniority in both chambers.

Schatz will serve until an election is held in 2014. He said he will run for re-election to try to keep the Senate seat until 2016 ? the end of Inouye's original term ? and would run again for Senate in 2016 if given the chance.

Hanabusa congratulated Schatz in a statement.

"Having served as chair of the Hawaii Senate Judiciary Committee when the succession law was passed, I fully respect the process and the governor's right to appoint a successor," she said.

Last week, when Abercrombie announced he would not seek the seat himself, his spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy said Abercrombie intends to make his current post as Hawaii governor the last office of his political career.

Inouye would be "very happy" with the choice, Hawaii Democratic Party chairman Dante Carpenter said. Schatz has less experience than some older politicians in the Senate but he will be building seniority, which is "critical" to the state of Hawaii, he said.

"In the words of Sen. Dan Inouye ? invoked more than once ? seniority in the United States Congress is everything," Carpenter said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had urged Abercrombie to name Inouye's successor before the end of the year. The next Congress begins Jan. 3.

Democratic Rep. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, was elected in November to succeed Akaka.

First in line to replace Schatz as lieutenant governor is Senate President Shan Tsutsui, who said he planned to discuss the prospect with his family before deciding.

Singapore's Top 20 Inexpensive Restaurants | ladyironchef: Food ...

Singapore

Dining out is an expensive affair, and nowadays, it is very difficult to find a decent restaurant/cafe which has main courses for under $20. However, if you know where to go, there are still some hidden gems that are waiting to be discovered.

Here is a list of Singapore?s Top 20 Inexpensive Restaurants where you can go for a good meal, even on a budget.

Note: I?m a little wary of using the words ?inexpensive and budget? because everyone has different interpretations. For me, a good inexpensive restaurant is one that serves quality food at acceptable prices. It doesn?t necessarily need to be dirt-cheap, it can also represent places that offer value-for-money options, such as Club Street Social and Oriole Cafe in this list.

2012: The Year in TV Moments

    HBO, April 22, 10:30 p.m. ET

The scene opens with Hannah (Lena Dunham) in bed with her kind-of-boyfriend Adam (Adam Driver), doing it in the missionary position, Adam thrusting violently and breathing hard. ?You like that?? he asks Hannah. ?What do you like??

?I like everything; I like what you?re doing,? she replies, immediately revealing that she doesn?t know?or doesn?t want to say?what she likes. Adam begins narrating a fantasy: He found Hannah on the street, 11 years old, carrying a Cabbage Patch lunchbox. Hannah has clearly never heard this story before, but she gamely plays along, adopting a breathy, theatrical voice in response to Adam?s make-believe.

Suddenly, Adam pulls out, rips off his condom, and asks Hannah where she wants him to ejaculate??Face? Tummy? Those little tits of yours?? Hannah gives an extraordinary nonresponse to his question: ?It seems like you want to come on my tits, so I think you should come on my tits, because I want you to come, and it seems like you?re going to do it.? After gently choking Hannah and telling her never to have an orgasm without calling him first, Adam ejaculates on her arm. ?That was really good,? says Hannah. ?That was so good. I almost came.? Adam offers her some orange Gatorade. And cut to the title card.

Most TV and film sex scenes still involve two people undulating their bodies against each other as slowly as humanly possible and gazing nonstop into each other?s eyes?except when their lids flutter shut as they climax simultaneously. On the other end of the straight sex-scene spectrum lies, of course, hardcore porn, in which the women are always climaxing, sometimes for hours at a stretch, as men penetrate and manipulate their bodies in all sorts of ferocious ways, until we finally reach the money shot. Rarely do we see anything between these two fantasies?one neutered, one embellished, both purporting to show people having a great time in the sack.

What about when people are in the sack, but not having a great time? Rarely is bad sex shown on TV as it occurs in real life: physically uncomfortable, emotionally complicated, politically imbalanced.

What amazes me about this opening scene from the second episode of Girls, which clocks in at less than two minutes, is how authentically it speaks to the power dynamics often in play when young heterosexual people hook up. Porn?s widespread availability, the growing embrace of Dan Savage?s philosophy of the ideal sex partner (?GGG,? or ?good, giving, and game?), and deeply entrenched differences in how we socialize boys and girls combine to create sexual encounters in which both parties are doing what they think they should be doing, and yet neither is fully satisfied. I?d wager that a lot of bad heterosexual sex among twentysomethings looks at least a bit like Hannah and Adam?s: With the man aggressively pursuing his desires, and the woman doing whatever she can to enable those desires.

But Adam and Hannah?s bad sex scene isn?t only a pointed critique of modern gender dynamics; it?s one step in the slow development of a complex, ultimately tender relationship. Later in the season, we hear Hannah and Adam again having sex, this time with mutually enthusiastic dirty talk and an actual?not ?almost??orgasm on Hannah?s part. And if the trailer for Season 2 is to be believed, Hannah will be aggressively pursuing her own sexual desires with the likes of Donald Glover and Patrick Wilson. I hope, for Hannah?s sake, that she has good sex with at least one of her new paramours.

But I also hope, for the show?s sake, that bad sex isn?t completely out of the picture now that Hannah?s a little older and wiser. That?s not how it works in real life, after all: Bad sex doesn?t magically disappear once you sleep with a few people and figure out what you like in bed. Bad sex requires not inexperience or timidity; all it requires is two people with mismatched preferences and less-than-perfect communication skills. Given the facts that preferences vary wildly and virtually everyone has less-than-perfect communication skills, this means that when you are in your 20s and single and dating, the threat of bad sex is everywhere?including now, finally, on television. I hope we see more of it there.

The $500 Baseball Glove With Its Own Conditioning Program

That turd-sucker Dave from Sales giving you crap for playing on the company softball team with the same beat up old glove that got you through your high school JV season? Let him, and everyone else, know you came to play by showing up with the Mizuno Pro Limited Edition glove.

Not your father?s baseball glove, the Pro Limited is made from the finest Northern European Kip leather, tanned using proprietary Japanese Deguchi tanning methods. We have no idea what that means either, but it sounds impressive. And Mizuno claims it makes the Pro Limited stronger than any other glove on the market.

Inside, they?ve lined it with a Shika Palm Liner made of elite deerskin so soft you?ll barely feel that frozen rope line drive crashing into your palm. There?s also a carry bag to keep it from getting dinged in your trunk on the way to the park. And each one of these limited edition gloves is stamped with a unique serial number so Dave doesn?t swipe yours and claim he bought the same one.

Available in 10 different editions so every position on the field can feel like a pro, Mizuno has engineered each glove with their Speed Drive Technology that delivers a perfectly balanced position for the fastest reaction response possible.

Because you deserve to get your $500 worth, the Pro Limited also comes with its own off-season conditioning program. No need to worry about re-lacing a loose web or replacing the thumb felt, you?re covered. They?ll even condition the glove perfectly for you using the company?s Strong Oil?no need to put a ball in the pocket and leave it under your mattress for a week anymore.

These days your mattress should be used for other things.

Investing In Europe: Is the Chemicals Sector a Buy? | Inside Investing

Editor?s note: This is part of an interview series with charterholders around the world. We met up with Christian Faitz, CFA, who heads chemicals equity research for Europe at Macquarie Securities in Frankfurt to ask some quick questions. He has been covering the sector for more than 16 years.

CFA Institute: What do investors need to know about the European chemicals sector?

Christian Faitz, CFA: The chemicals sector in Europe is one that has heavily restructured. Almost all of the listed companies have sold off their basic chemical parts, either to private equity or to Middle Eastern companies. They have concentrated on higher value-added chemicals that are closer to the end consumer. This is a move we?ve seen over the past 15 years. The chemicals industry is in pretty good shape because of the restructuring, and that makes it interesting.

Are there fundamental trends that are driving the numbers?

The European chemicals industry has been faring exceptionally well over the past three years. It has had strong pricing power and volume growth. It?s driven by growing demand from car manufacturers that want to replace metal parts in engines with plastic ones. In Asia, and in China specifically, people are buying premium cars like crazy. To produce each premium car, an automaker needs about 250 kilograms of chemicals.

Another point is that the chemicals industry in Europe, and in the United States up until recently, has been very disciplined in terms of capacity expansion. The companies had a limited supply of chemicals, so the companies had the ability to negotiate good prices with their customers.

You mentioned carmakers. What else is driving demand in the European chemicals sector?

Demand from the construction industry is no longer strong. We all know what happened on the construction side in the United States and in Europe. Demand still comes mostly from the automotive sector. Sales are usually broken down into 25% for cars, another 20?25% for the construction industry (for example, for insulation materials), and another 15% for consumer electronics. These three industries account for the majority of the demand.

It all goes back to global megatrends, such as mobility. For better mobility, you need lighter-weight cars, which companies make by replacing metal parts with plastic ones. You can extend battery life that way, too.

Another megatrend is saving energy and reducing carbon dioxide emissions with proper housing insulation. Because insulation is a chemical product, chemical companies stand to benefit. Another trend is the need for better productivity in agriculture, something the chemicals industry caters to with pesticides and the like.

Would you recommend the European chemicals sector as an investment play?

Definitely. Chemicals are operationally strong and riding the global trends I mentioned. The world population is growing. We hit the 7 billion mark last year, and we?ll soon be hitting the 8 billion mark. That growth means the world needs more efficient nutrients, but we have less and less arable land. Agriculture productivity must rise, and the best way is with agrochemicals and fertilizers. This is a given. Pesticides and fertilizers help keep plants healthy, increase nutrients, and make farming more efficient.
European chemicals are definitely a long-term investment play, and farmers are once again spending on agricultural inputs and safeguards to stabilize yields for next year. They have more to spend now because of higher prices for corn, soybeans, and wheat as a result of the U.S. drought this summer.

    But what about the risks?

The European chemicals sector is strongly linked to the automotive and construction industries globally. As such, it is impacted by swings in GDP. If global output cools down, the European chemicals sector will obviously be hurt.

You?ve been covering the chemicals sector for quite some time. How have you personally developed your ?edge? ? that is, the investment approach you recommend for your clients?

During my time, I have seen many trends that didn?t last, and I have heard management say many times that ?this time is different.? The industry moved into and out of pharma, back into pharma, and out of it again. I learned to take this all with a skeptical view.

In addition, Macquarie Securities has developed a proprietary chemicals index that tests for the operational strength of the industry. It is composed of 17 macroeconomic indicators that help us understand how the operating environment for the chemicals industry is developing ? independent of management statements.

Ed: So, perhaps for investors searching for value in Europe might take a look at the chemicals sector, but it also seems like it will be important to construct an informed view on the demand coming from other sectors.

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten,?left,?congratulates Brandon Carr?after Carr's interception against the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime on Sunday, Dec. 16. Dallas won 27-24.

    Michael Ventre

If ever there were a ?Year of the Cowboys,? this just might be it.

I?m not a big believer in the Dallas Cowboys. They send a message of excess. They throw money around on players and a stadium, have an attention-seeking owner who is more prominent than any of the players, and they tend to choke and fizzle in major moments.

Until this year. Maybe all the despair is finally getting to them. Perhaps they?ve been so hardened by disappointment that they?re suddenly feeling invincible.

Their overtime win Sunday against the Steelers was gutty and resilient. But so was their effort the week before against the Bengals, and the week before that against the Eagles. They?re not just showing signs of life, but of determination and perseverance.

They also had to deal with the recent death of a teammate. Jerry Brown was killed in a car accident in which his friend Josh Brent was driving. Brent has been charged with intoxication manslaughter, yet he was allowed to stand on the Cowboys? sideline Sunday, and has been embraced by Brown?s family. It?s impossible to gauge just what all that means to the Cowboys, other that it suggest strength in the face of real adversity.

The Cowboys have two contests left ? Sunday, at home, against New Orleans, and a week later on the road against the Redskins. Dallas is 8-6, and so are the Redskins and Giants in the NFC East. It?s a muddled division, and who knows which teams will be playing in the postseason and which will be on holiday.

But I do know this: These don?t seem to be the same old Cowboys. That?s got to be a big relief in Dallas.

    Now that's a deal!
Over the weekend, the New York Mets accelerated the process of trading away their aging breakout star, knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, to Toronto for ? in part ? two young players: Travis d?Arnaud, considered the top catching prospect in baseball; and 6-7 righthander Noah Syndergaard, the No. 1 prize on the Jays? pitching farm.

The deal makes sense, because the Mets need a lot of help, and Dickey was their only real trading card. But it does create the perception that the Mets ? once willing to throw money around to entice free agents and attract fans ? have gone uber-frugal.

Yet the Dickey move is not as bargain-basement as Groupon.

Right around the time the Dickey trade was happening, Groupon sent out a blast advertising Mets tickets at a discount. Among the options, tickets normally priced at $12 are now $9. In other words, you save $3. So far, 100 such ducats have been purchased. Groupon warns that there is a limited quantity available, although I suspect they?re limited to the number they can sell.

There are 20 options available, with single game and four-game packs to choose from. It doesn?t say anything about whether the offer extends to playoff tickets, but I think I can guess why.

Now I love Groupon. But when I get a Groupon e-mail, I expect to see offers for half-off hang-gliding lessons, or Thai massage, or hyperallergenic pillows. I don?t expect to see deals for New York Mets tickets. There is nothing wrong with that, of course. But it leaves me with the same impression I used to get when I would go to a bookstore and see a Rick Pitino book on leadership and success selling for a buck.

What?s next, Mets? Ticket booths at flea markets?

    Center of attention
Andrew Bynum made some comments this past weekend, and if he were anyone else he?d be skewered and ridiculed. After all, the former Laker hasn?t yet played for his new team, the Philadelphia 76ers. And he has an eye-catching new hair style sure to bring him added scrutiny.

But Bynum has no filter. And in his case, that?s a good thing.

For instance, he said that playing with Kobe Bryant on the Lakers stunted his growth as a basketball player. Usually, other players can only speak of Kobe in reverential tones. But Bynum was just being matter-of-fact. And he was right. Kobe takes a lot of shots, thereby denying Bynum touches. No less an authority than Kobe Bryant himself agreed with Bynum?s observation.

Then Bynum referred to the Lakers? current center, Dwight Howard, and said L.A. traded No. 1 for No. 2. In other words, Bynum feels that he, and not Howard, is the best center in the game.

That notion is a tad ludicrous coming from someone who has spent more time in doctor?s offices than Howard has on the court. But it isn?t that far-fetched. In the rare stretches when Bynum was healthy for the Lakers, he played some dominant basketball. He offered glimpses of what he could be ? and it was at least possible that he could develop into the game?s top center.

Even if you laugh upon hearing a man in street clothes claiming he?s better than a man in uniform, you have to give Bynum points for confidence. He believes he?s better. That sort of gumption comes in handy on the hardwood.

Now ? if he can only get back to the hardwood ?

    A game of pepper
When it was announced that Michigan suspended three players for the Outback Bowl against South Carolina, an obvious question arose: Who gets their goodie bags? ?

If Edgar Allan Poe were alive today, I think he?d take one look at the Ravens and then change the name of ?The Raven? to a scarier bird. ?

I wonder if, when Jerry Jones sees an outcome to a Cowboys? game like he saw Sunday, he gives the guy who cleans his glasses a tip? ?

I don?t think Pau Gasol should be allowed to use exclamation marks in his Tweets ? English and Spanish versions ? until he returns to the court. ?

Because of the NHL lockout, does that mean the Los Angeles Kings have been carrying the Stanley Cup around all this time? And are their friends starting to say things like, ?Yeah, we saw it already.? ?

I don?t know a thing about professional wrestling. I just found out wrestler Steve Borden?s nickname is Sting. Didn?t he do ?The Ring?s Too Big Without You?? ?

    Life Sciences Discovery Fund

SEATTLE, Washington, December 14, 2012 The Life Sciences Discovery Fund (LSDF) today announced over $1 million in five awards to support commercial development of new health and health-care products within both the non-profit and for-profit sectors in Washington.

Two of the five new grants were made under the 2012 Commercialization grant competition and focus on promising diagnostic technologies developed in the state's non-profit research organizations. Gerard Cangelosi of the University of Washington will develop and evaluate a rapid test to detect health care-associated infections. Nathan Sniadecki of the University of Washington will create a prototype device to assess risk of internal bleeding in trauma patients.

Two awards were made under the 2012-2013 Proof of Concept granting program to help position early-stage Washington companies for private equity investment. Epoch Medical Innovations, Inc. (principal investigator Michael Ballas) will develop a system that improves the fit and comfort of prosthetic legs by automatically adjusting to volume changes in the residual limb. Crux Medical Innovations (principal investigator Bob Clements) will create a prototype device to enhance quality, yield, and speed of gastrointestinal biopsy collection, with the ultimate aim of improving disease diagnosis.

The fifth award provides additional funding to advance commercialization of technology developed through one of LSDF's previous grants. Daniel Chiu of the University of Washington has created an assay that would allow doctors to detect signs of cancer recurrence early to improve survival. The new funding will support validation of novel technology to further increase the test's sensitivity and better position the team to commercialize the product in Washington.

"We are pleased to use our funding to not only improve the diagnosis and treatment of serious medical conditions, but also catalyze the flow of dollars into our state and promote the development of Washington's life sciences corporate community," stated LSDF executive director John DesRosier.

The LSDF Board of Trustees made the final award selections following review of grant proposals for scientific and technical merit, commercial potential, and possible health and economic benefits.

Lura Powell, chair of the Board of Trustees, explained the rationale behind LSDF's strategy of funding research and development at both non-profit and for-profit organizations. "This coordinated approach serves to push promising discoveries out of our first-rate research institutions and into companies, and also help those companies thrive in Washington so that our state can reap the economic and health benefits associated with commercialization."

    ###

LSDF is currently accepting pre-proposals from Washington for-profit and non-profit organizations for both Proof of Concept and Opportunity grants. Up to $6.5 million is available for award through June 2013. For more details, please visit the LSDF website at http://www.lsdfa.org/, email programs@lsdfa.org, or call 206-456-9577.

Funding for the new awards comes from Washington's allocation of payments under the Master Tobacco Settlement Agreement of 1998, revenues arising from multi-state litigation with tobacco product manufacturers.

My Samsung Galexy S3 | Business PR News

A month ago, while I was in a community environment, someone next to me snapped at me out of the blue.? Everyone turned around and was wondering what had happened.? I was puzzled and was wondering what had happened.?

It was a busy night.? I had to pack for a trip in a few hours.? While I was packing, I was still thinking about what had happened.? Though my trip was for something very happy to me, being snapped at out of the blue, took my smile from me.

I was up all night catching up on my works before I left to catch a flight at 6:45am, boarding at 6:15am.? I wanted to be at the airport early to be ahead of the long line.? We drove to the airport around 4:30am.? Got through all the lines smoothly.? But was still thinking about what had happened a few hours earlier that evening.? And of course, it was hard to smile when you're tire and got snapped at for nothing.

Right after I got through the line and was walking towards the gate, was tire, deep in thoughts, no smile, couldn't smile... suddenly, I saw this gigantic picture high on wall to my left.

"I have a song for you." It said on the picture.? It was a picture of a person holding out a phone in front of him.? I look closely, it was a Samsung phone!? A GS3!? Yes!? I just got a GS3 too!? So, I took out my phone and put it up on the picture of the GS3 phone on the wall.? Instantly, my S Beam was on and I was redirected to a page saying my download is ready.

Oh, I got excited and it put a smile on my face :-)

I kept walking towards the gate.? Sat down and realized, my battery was running low.? So, I quickly turned off my phone to conserve battery.

It was Thursday morning.? It was a busy trip.? I didn't get a chance to check out what was the song downloaded on my phone until late Sunday evening.? While I was resting and checking my phone, I swing over to check out the downloaded song.?

I clicked on it and guess what???The name of the song was "Smile Big" by Leftover Cuties.? Oh Wow!? For me?!!? How did anyone knew that I wasn't feeling so un-cheerful and needed a smile?

See, sometimes, when you think no one cares, there, someone knows and does care :-)

Here's the song.? I found it on YouTube.? I thought the story was pretty interesting and thought of sharing it here.? Click on it and enjoy.? It made me smile.

    ?

By the way, two weeks later, when?I saw the person who snapped at me, she called me over and apologized in front of everyone.? She assured me that there was nothing I did, but was her not feeling well that evening.? She apologized over and over again.? I smiled and told her the story of the song I downloaded.? She smiled too and was happy to hear that.? We hug and smiled.

?Here's the song in Samsung GS3 commercial!

Petersen Automotive Museum Opens Vault to Public for the First Time

    Just the Facts:
    • The Petersen Automotive Museum, for the first time in its history, is allowing the public to tour its famous vault, which houses more than half of the museum's collection.
    • Tucked into the vault are such vehicles as a rare Jaguar XKSS formerly owned by Steve McQueen and a Volkswagen Beetle driven by Lindsay Lohan.
    • Guided tours will run through January 6, after which the vault will once again remain accessible only to museum staff and special guests.

LOS ANGELES ? The Petersen Automotive Museum, for the first time in its history, is allowing the public to tour its famous vault, which houses more than half of the museum's collection.

Tucked into the vault are such vehicles as a rare Jaguar XKSS formerly owned by Steve McQueen and a Volkswagen Beetle driven by Lindsay Lohan in Herbie Fully Loaded.

Other noteworthy vehicles include a one-of-a-kind 1925 "Round Door" Rolls-Royce Phantom, a 1939 Bugatti given to the Shah of Iran as a wedding present and a Ferrari given to Henry Ford II by Enzo Ferrari.

Guided tours will run only through January 6, after which the vault will once again remain accessible only to museum staff and special guests.

The main floors of the museum are able to hold only about 150 vehicles at any given time, but the entire collection comprises more than twice that number, with most of them stored underground in the vault, which runs the entire length of the 300,000-square-foot building.

The vault has become legendary among regular museum-goers, who have often asked for tours, but until now it has been strictly off-limits, except to employees and special guests.

The Petersen Automotive Museum, one of the largest in the world, was founded by publishing giant Robert E. Petersen, whose stable of 36 monthly magazines included Hot Rod, Motor Trend, Rod & Custom, and Car Craft.

Petersen, a Los Angeles native, returned home from service in the Army Air Corps in World War II and quickly became swept up in the burgeoning California car culture. He published the first issue of Hot Rod in January 1948, and rode his motorcycle to racetracks and retail outlets around the state, selling the magazine for 25 cents.

Other publications followed, and as his empire grew, so did his collection of vehicles and automotive memorabilia. In June of 1994, he and his wife, Margie, along with a group of supportive friends, opened the museum to house both Petersen's private collection and vehicles on loan from various institutions and individuals.

The treasures include a collection of vintage Southern California hot rods, a Popemobile, a Hot Wheels toy display and Elvis Presley's 1971 De Tomaso Pantera.

The vault will open for tours on December 15. An additional ticket purchase of $25 is required and includes access to the vault.

Edmunds says: The only downside is that photography is not permitted.

MRS Releases Free White Paper on Reliable Communications ...

Mine Radio Systems, an industry-leading communication and safety solutions provider for the harsh mining environment, has released a free white paper on reliable communications in underground mines.

Following tragic events in many underground mines such as those at the Darby, Alma and Sago coal mines, the need for reliable communications systems in underground mines became evident. These incidents triggered the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 in the US. The most important aspect of the MINER Act is providing reliable communication for miners before and after tragic incidents.
