Kim Jong Un Propaganda: Chinese Magazine

A cover story in the latest issue of ??? [View, 2011, Vol. 35, pp. 59-62], a national weekly magazine published in Beijing, contains some new information from North Korea as regards the successor, Kim Jong Un.

Mainly this information takes the form of conveying internal rumors favorable to Kim Jong Un which are presently circulating in the DPRK.? While the source is rather unclear (listed as ?North Korean propaganda materials?), it seems probable that the Chinese reporters are also conveying information given in conversation with North Korean colleagues. Wednesday 28th December, 2011 (IANS)

Eli Guttman has been named the new coach of the Israel football team, the country's football association announced.

Guttman, the former Hapoel Tel Aviv manager, replaced Frenchman Luis Fernandez for the job.

Fernandez's contract was not renewed after he failed to lead Israel to the Euro 2012 finals.

'I am happy to announce the new coach of the Israel team,' chairman Avi Luzon was quoted as saying by Xinhua. 'The choice of Eli Guttman is not by chance, Eli is a professional with tactical discipline.'

'Today I am fulfilling half a dream,' the 53-year-old Guttman said. 'The second half will be fulfilled for all of us when we qualify for the World Cup.'

Guttman's first match in charge will be a friendly against Euro 2012 hosts Ukraine Feb 29.

Cape Town Opera returns to London with Porgy

First published: 28 Dec 2011

Cape Town Opera will return to London next summer with a revival of its 2009 production of Porgy And Bess. Following a UK tour, the show will play a two-week run at the London Coliseum.

George Gershwin's iconic opera was written in 1935 and features lyrics by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. The show, which marks 75 years since George Gershwin's untimely death, will run at London's prestigious opera venue from 11 to 21 July.

Set during the 1920s in America's Deep South, Porgy And Bess tells the story of Porgy, a disabled beggar living in the busy community of Catfish Row, who desperately tries to save the beautiful Bess from her violent boyfriend Crown and the sleazy dope-dealer Sportin' Life.

The seminal piece features songs including Summertime, I Got Plenty Of Nuttin', It Ain't Necessarily So and I Love You Porgy.

Renowned for its gifted young singers, Cape Town Opera is the largest performing arts company in South Africa. The company made its critically acclaimed UK debut with Porgy And Best in 2009 with The Times declaring: "You'd need a heart of concrete not to come out smiling."?

When will Israel come to terms with its extremism?

Israel has not only been tolerating its extremism, but abetting and encouraging it. In light of the Naama Margolese story, will it finally wake up?

Rather than thinking aptly and correctly by seeing a fair peace deal with the Palestinians, whose land it has usurped, as fundamental to the security and stability of both the Palestinians and Israelis, Israel has, in a very manipulative and perverse way, been doing its best to deprive the Palestinians of both peace and their inalienable rights.

Towards this malicious end, the Israeli government ? in addition to its mighty military machine, the swallowing of Palestinian lands through illegal settlements, demolition of Palestinian homes, indiscriminate imprisonment of Palestinian demonstrators, the countless checkpoints it erects between Palestinian towns, etc. ? has not only been turning a blind eye to continuous provocative and criminal acts committed by Jewish extremists against Palestinian civilians, but also encouraging such acts for the purpose of further uprooting the Palestinian people.

These acts, which have escalated both systematically and dramatically over the years, include, but are not limited to: the burning of mosques, the cutting of olive trees, the shooting of Palestinians going to work in their fields, the forced possession of some houses in Palestinian neighbourhoods, etc.

In the vast majority of these acts, the Israeli police or army ?fails? to do anything to protect the Palestinian victims. When the Palestinians seek justice and retribution from Israeli courts, they get nowhere, as Israeli courts often turn down Palestinians petitions, for all kinds of pretexts, or legalise what the extremists commit.

All of this is part and parcel of Israel?s depopulation policies. When the Israelis were ?establishing? their ?home? on Palestinian lands in the 1930s and 1940s, they used not only violence but terrorism against the Palestinian owners and inhabitants of the land. The massacres of Deir Yassin, Qibya, and others speak louder than words. And so does the total demolition of the three Latrun villages of Amwas, Yalu, and Beit Nouba ? in addition to others ? in 1967.

The Israeli occupation machine has always relied, in dispossessing Palestinians and expanding its ?homeland? into Palestine, on the various monsters and devils that it created.

The current extremists ? religious as well as secular ? are serving Israel?s selfish and narrow-minded interests, no doubt. However, what will Israel do when these extremists start harming Israelis directly? What should it do when the monsters it has created start backfiring?

It is these same extremists who assassinated former Israeli premier Yitzhak Rabin, the only true Israeli peacemaker. Where would the Palestinians and Israelis be today had Rabin?s life been spared? Where would the region be? In a much better position.

And yet, Israel ? which, like the Palestinians, has lost a lot as a result of the demise of Rabin ? did nothing to combat its extremists. As a matter of fact, such extremism has not only grown, and grown more aggressive, but has become more widespread. The entire Israeli society has become more extreme and controlled by extremists: their current prime minister and the vast majority of his ministers included.

What the ultra-orthodox Jews of Israel ? who, according to some estimates, constitute 10 per cent of the entire Israeli population ? did to Margolese comes as a vivid reminder of the dangerous path Israel is following by either failing to curb, or nourishing, its extremism.

Margolese, a second-grader who was going to her religious school dressed modestly, was harassed and terrorised by a group of ultra-religious Jews, who called her a ?whore? for dressing ?immodestly.?

Should not this incident call for some soul-searching on the part of Israel, and some reconsideration of how it has been dealing with its own extremism? Shouldn?t it be a wake-up call for Israeli society?

What the extremist did to Margolese is a metaphor ? though a small, tiny one ? of what the Israeli extremists have been doing to the Palestinians for more than 80 years.

Sen. Ben Nelson retiring, dealing blow to Dems (AP)

LINCOLN, Neb. ? Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska said Tuesday he will retire rather than seek a third term next year, dealing a significant setback to Democratic efforts to maintain control of the chamber.

The 70-year-old conservative Democrat, whose seat is being heavily targeted by Republicans in 2012, said in a statement that "while I relish the opportunity to undertake the work that lies ahead, I also feel it's time for me to step away from elective office, spend more time with my family, and look for new ways to serve our state and nation."

"Therefore, I am announcing today that I will not seek re-election," he said. "Simply put: It is time to move on."

Republicans, who need to net four seats to take back the Senate next year, say Nebraska has tilted further to the right in recent years and have made Nelson's seat a 2012 priority. Nelson is the lone Democrat among the state's five-member congressional delegation, and Republicans think his vote for President Barack Obama's signature health care legislation would have weighed him down.

Nelson still could have given Democrats a fighting chance. A two-term governor before winning a Senate seat, he has shown an ability to rebound after being down in previous statewide races.

But he's recently expressed dismay about a divided Congress' inability to pass meaningful legislation, frustration that echoed in the Tuesday statement in which he said public office is "about promoting the common good, not the agenda of the radical right or the radical left."

"I encourage those who will follow in my footsteps to look for common ground and to work together in bipartisan ways to do what's best for the country, not just one political party," he said.

Even as Nelson wavered about whether to seek another term, he piled up campaign cash, hired a campaign manager and watched his party spend more than $1 million on ads supporting him. Prominent Nebraska Democrats said they were shocked by his announcement Tuesday and concerned about who they might field against the Republican nominee.

"I'm absolutely stunned," said Kathleen Fahey, a Democratic super-delegate in 2008. "Ben has been such a great senator for everybody. I'm not liking this."

The campaign preparation had left Nelson with a healthy cash advantage. He had more than $3 million cash on hand last month, about twice his nearest competitor, and had the luxury of stockpiling money while Republicans focused on a crowded primary.

Nelson's retirement likely will drag the GOP race even further to the right, said University of Nebraska Lincoln political scientist Mark Wagner.

"Whoever wins the primary is likely to be the senator from Nebraska for as long as they want," Wagner said.

The GOP ticket includes Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, state Treasurer Don Stenberg, state Sen. Deb Fischer, and investment adviser Pat Flynn.

Bruning on Tuesday wished Nelson well and praised him as "a dedicated public servant of the state of Nebraska for over two decades," while Fischer expressed confidence the GOP would now claim the seat.

"I think we have a strong group of Republicans, and I happen to believe the seat will go to a Republican," Fischer said.

Nelson first was elected to the Senate in 2000, defeating Republican contender Stenberg to replace the retired Bob Kerrey. His centrist stance helped him get re-elected over the years even as already-conservative Nebraska became even more dominated by Republicans.

"In one respect, he certainly deserves to have some time away from the political scene," said Democratic super-delegate Steve Achelpohl. "But on the other hand, it certainly is going to leave a void."

He was one of only two Senate Democrats to support a failed GOP bid to block new federal controls on power plant pollution that blows downwind into other states. And he took great pride in his membership in the 2005 "Gang of 14," made up of Republicans and Democrats who brokered a deal to avoid a filibuster showdown over President George W. Bush's judicial nominees.

However, Nelson's vote in favor of Obama's signature health reform measure left the GOP confident they could beat the Democrat next year. The health reforms are strongly opposed by many Nebraska conservatives, and after the vote Nebraska Republicans immediately kicked off a "Give Ben the Boot" campaign.

"For once Senator Nelson has listened to Nebraskans," Nebraska Republican Party Chairman Mark Fahleson said Tuesday. "The Nebraska Republican Party is more focused than ever on electing another conservative Republican to join Sen. Mike Johanns and recapturing the U.S. Senate so that we can reverse the damage done by Ben Nelson, Washington Democrats and the Obama Administration."

Nelson upset incumbent Nebraska Gov. Kay Orr in 1990 to earn his first statewide office and was re-elected in 1994 by a landslide. In 1996, he reneged on a campaign pledge that he would not seek higher office while governor and announced his candidacy for the Senate seat vacated by the retiring Gov. Jim Exon.

Omaha millionaire businessman Chuck Hagel soundly defeated Nelson in that Senate race. The two later served as colleagues when Nelson was elected in 2000.

Obama on Tuesday issued a statement thanking Nelson for his public service.

"Over the course of his career, Ben's commitment to working with both Democrats and Republicans across a broad range of issues is a trait far too often overlooked in today's politics," the president said.

2011's top 11 twists from the world of science

Fabrice Coffrini / AFP - Getty Images

Visitors watch an on-screen presentation at the "Universe of Particles" exhibition at CERN, where physicists are trying to track down the Higgs boson as well as faster-than-light neutrinos.

By Alan Boyle

The past year brought us the supercomputer that trounced?flesh-and-blood champions on the "Jeopardy" TV show ... genetic discoveries that showed us the tangles in humanity's family tree ... a tsunami that shouldn't have been as catastrophic as it was ... and neutrinos that shouldn't be going as fast as they seem to. Which scientific twist of 2011 do you find most intriguing? Now's the time to cast your vote for the top science story of 2011.

This year's crop of top stories is trickier than usual because they cross so many lines. I've pared them down to a list of 11, but the only reason I'm able to do that is because of the way the lines are being drawn. I've already touched on two of the biggest science stories of 2011 in our "Year in Space" roundup: the end of the space shuttle era and the avalanche of extrasolar planets.?Our "Ancient Mysteries" roundup casts a spotlight on the big stories in archaeology, anthropology and paleontology.?I'm also leaving out?some big?stories with technology angles, such as the Arab?Spring protests?and the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

So what's left? In this list, I'm stressing the twists in science and technology that go against expectations ? or set up great expectations for the year ahead. I'm also including some personal favorites that you can feel free to quibble over. Check out this chronological?list, review the details by clicking on the links, then cast your vote for the year's top science story:

Japan hit by quake, tsunami, nuclear crisis: The magnitude-8.9 quake that hit Japan in March qualifies as a top story on any scale, but the safety gaps at the Fukushima nuclear facility showed scientifically how nature can confound engineers' best-laid plans. It was just this month that Japan's prime minister announced the facility was in a stable state of "cold shutdown."?Fukushima may be an albatross around the neck of the nuclear power industry for years to come.?Or maybe not. Check out "After the Wave," msnbc.com's special report about the?earthquake's aftermath.?

AIDS virus on the run? An international study finds that people who take antiretroviral drugs ? medicine that weakens the HIV virus that causes?AIDS ? not only benefit from treatment but are far less likely to?infect their sexual partners. The finding?was so remarkable that the results were made public four years early, and last week the editors of the journal Science hailed it as the year's top breakthrough.

Climate highs and lows:?This month, a U.N. climate conference?reached agreement on a new plan to control greenhouse-gas emissions, but it's not clear whether the plan will pay off. Meanwhile, a former climate skeptic says he no longer doubts the reality of global warming, the climate issue creates a controversy on the GOP campaign trail, "Climategate 2.0" fails to gain traction, and Arctic sea ice is?close to?record lows.??

Goodbye, Tevatron ... hello, Higgs boson? After 28 years of service, the Tevatron collider was shut down in Illinois in September, leaving the Large Hadron Collider as the only experiment hunting for the elusive Higgs boson. Discovery of that particle could show scientists how mass arose in the universe. Researchers at the LHC suspect that they've got the?subatomic bugger cornered, but the actual discovery (or determination that it doesn't exist after all) will have to wait until next year.

Faster-than-light neutrinos? Physicists at CERN and Italy's Gran Sasso laboratory say they've clocked bunches of neutrinos traveling between the two labs at a speed that's just a bit faster than the speed of light ? something that relativity theory contends should be impossible. Most observers are confident that the claim will be proven wrong in 2012, due to some sort of experimental error. But a rerun of the test in November, under somewhat different conditions, came up with the same result. Stay tuned...

Watson wins on 'Jeopardy': IBM programmed a supercomputer named Watson?to dominate the "Jeopardy" TV trivia game, and dominate it did. The point of the exercise wasn't to win the $1 million prize, which was donated to charity; rather, the technology behind Watson is being applied to medical diagnoses and other applications. We puny humans can take heart in the fact that Watson is not infallible. After all, it thought Toronto was a U.S. city, and it actually lost a game to U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (although, come to think of it, that might have been a political move on Watson's part).

Gamers untangle protein puzzles: Game-playing humans struck back this year by figuring out the molecular structure of a key enzyme in an AIDS-like virus that afflicts rhesus monkeys. The protein-folding?achievement, accomplished by the players of an online game called Foldit,?served as further evidence that non-scientists can help conduct valuable scientific research through collaborative software. Foldit's game-playing teams even came up with new mathematical algorithms for solving?biochemical puzzles more efficiently.

Genetic family tree gets tangled: Late last year, researchers announced that they found genetic twists in our DNA that pointed to a previously unknown branch of our ancient family tree. Some of our ancestors interbred?with?creatures in Siberia that were not like modern humans or Neanderthals, but were of a distinct strain now known as the Denisovans. This year, geneticists reported that interbreeding with Denisovans and Neanderthals gave a big boost to our ancestors' immune systems. There's also evidence that our ancestors swapped genes with other now-extinct populations even before they left Africa. "Everywhere you look now, we find a little bit of interbreeding," said University of Arizona geneticist Michael Hammer.

Personalized medicine really works: Scientists have been saying for years that someday we'll all have our entire genomes sequenced, and that genomic analysis will open up a brave new world of personalized medicine. This year, it really happened. Physicians found a flaw in a California teen's genetic code that guided them to prescribe new medication for her bouts of sudden breathlessness. The success story serves as "the leading edge of what will become, pretty soon, a deluge of such reports," said Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health.

Heaviest antimatter created: Researchers at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reported seeing traces of antihelium-4 nuclei, made up of two antiprotons and two antineutrons. These are the heaviest bits of antimatter ever detected on Earth, and that record's likely to stand for a long, long time. Sorry, Dan Brown: The antimatter bomb you wrote about in "Angels?& Demons" will have to remain firmly in the realm of fiction.

Fingerpainting at prehistoric preschool: Here's something completely different: Researchers measured the widths of finger marks? to figure out that kids as young as?2 years old?exercised their artistry?on prehistoric cave walls, with an occasional boost from the grown-ups. It's amazing how archaeology can bring a 13,000-year-old culture to life.

So what am I forgetting? Space-time cloaking devices? New York's new bee species? Remember that I have a whole 'nother list of top stories?for space exploration as well as for ancient mysteries, and that I'm putting the Arab?Spring and Steve Jobs' death in a different category.?Let me know what else is?missing by leaving a comment below, and get ready to take a walk on the wild side later this week when it's time to judge the 2012 Weird Science Awards.

Israeli airstrikes kill Gaza militant

Israel carried out a series of airstrikes in the Gaza Strip late Tuesday, killing a Palestinian militant wounding others. Israel said it targeted militants before they could carry out an attack on the border between Israel and Egypt.

Gaza Health Ministry official Dr. Moaiya Hassanain said the militant was killed and another two injured in the explosion when a rocket hit his motorcycle Tuesday evening.

The Islamic Jihad, a violent Palestinian group that frequently fires rockets and mortars at Israel, said the he was a former member. The Israeli military said in a statement it targeted a "terror squad," without elaborating.

Another airstrike hit a Hamas police vehicle later Tuesday, injuring one Hamas officer and four others in the car, the Gaza health official said.

The Israeli military said it targeted "members of a global jihad terror group that were planning to attack the border."

In a statement, the military gave a list of the militants' names and said one of them used to be in Hamas before joining an even more radical jihadi group.

Such Israeli air attacks have been relatively rare since the end of a three-week Israeli war against Gaza militants three years ago.

It said the military will "not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians and soldiers, and will operate against anyone who uses terror against Israel."

In August, Palestinian militants who apparently sneaked out of Gaza into the Egyptian Sinai desert attacked Israelis on a border road in Israel, killing eight. Israeli forces pursuing the militants killed six Egyptian soldiers by mistake, setting off a diplomatic crisis between the two countries.

Also Tuesday, a hard-line Israeli group said it was launching plans for a new tourist center at the site of a politically sensitive archaeological dig in a largely Arab neighborhood outside Jerusalem's Old City, drawing fire from Palestinian officials.

The project's sponsor, the Elad Foundation, said the new visitors center and parking garage will be built above a section of the excavation area known as the City of David, leaving the ruins below accessible. Construction, which must pass several zoning committees, was still several years away.

Israeli archaeologists at the City of David, named for the biblical monarch thought to have ruled from the spot 3,000 years ago, are investigating the oldest part of Jerusalem.

The site is just outside the Old City walls at the edge of the neighborhood of Silwan in east Jerusalem, the part of the city the Palestinian Authority says it wants as the capital of a hoped-for state.

Israeli construction in east Jerusalem is regularly subject to international criticism. Critics say the new plan will cement Israel's hold on Silwan and could destabilize the volatile neighborhood, where Palestinian residents clash on occasion with Jewish residents and police.

Oxidative DNA damage repair

ScienceDaily (Dec. 27, 2011) ? Oxidative stress damages DNA. Researchers in the Vetsuisse Faculty have now decoded the mechanism that repairs DNA damaged in this way. This repair mechanism could lead to less invasive approaches in cancer therapy and contribute to the development of new tests for the early diagnosis of cancer.

Oxidative stress is the cause of many serious diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's, arteriosclerosis and diabetes. It occurs when the body is exposed to excessive amounts of electrically charged, aggressive oxygen compounds. These are normally produced during breathing and other metabolic processes, but also in the case of ongoing stress, exposure to UV light or X-rays. If the oxidative stress is too high, it overwhelms the body's natural defences. The aggressive oxygen compounds destroy genetic material, resulting in what are referred to as harmful 8-oxo-guanine base mutations in the DNA.

DNA repair mechanism decoded

Together with the University of Oxford, Enni Markkanen, a veterinarian in the working group of Prof. Ulrich H?bscher from the Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Zurich has decoded and characterized the repair mechanism for the mutated DNA bases. This mechanism efficiently copies thousands of 8-oxo-guanines without their harmful mutations, thus normally preventing the negative consequences of 8-oxo-guanine damage. In their study, published in "PNAS," the researchers outline the detailed processes involved in the local and temporal coordination of this repair mechanism. Prof. Ulrich H?bscher hopes that this basic research can be used therapeutically.

"We expect that the DNA repair mechanism discovered here will lead to less invasive approaches in cancer therapy and that it will be possible to develop new clinical tests for the early detection of certain types of cancer." In cooperation with University Hospital Zurich, a study is already underway that involves examining samples of different types of cancer for the repair gene and its regulation.

Steve has a discography containing in excess of 120 releases and countless remixes - on highly respected record labels. His love for Trance music saw him produce and play almost all sub genres, and his affection for psychedelic music stems from the time he discovered Goa trance in the mid 90's. Jessica B started working as a producer and DJ in 2005 instantly receiving recognition and praise for her first releases, which gained massive Radio 1 support. During her career, Jessica discovered her love for psychedelic music and teamed up with Steve to form their new group. Since that moment they have been on a long creative journey together, shaping and fine tuning their sound while testing their new material on stage.

JOURNEY's second Album 'Through The Mirror' (Press Release)

Howdy music lovers, welcome to a special edition of What Does Free Spirit Records Have New For You? Regular readers will know that Free Spirit Records is London based psy-trance label that has been bringing us aural wonderment through umpteen releases (too many for this humble journalist to accurately recall) from around the globe and across the spectrum. And the reason why this a special edition of WDFSRHNFY? Because it heralds the return of Jay OM's other half, the producer Journey, and the release of his second full-length album - Through the Mirror.
Jay OM/Journey have been doing it tough over the winter months, foisting their immeasurable talents upon the natives of southern Africa. Winning great acclaim and fostering many a friendship. Prior to this though he could be found squirreling away in his North London studio channelling his creativity to create the ten tunes that make up this latest offering all the whilst trying to avoid the concerns that come with following up the success of The Man Who Sold Time, his 2009 debut album.
The album feature some killer collaborations including artists such as Tron, Rastaliens, Holophonik, Monastic Squid and finishing with a superb downtempo track with Alexampt and Mononegro.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

JOURNEY is Giampiero 'Jay' Mastino born in Italy and now resides in London. His earliest psychedelic-rock influences were forged playing guitar in local bars in Milan and his romance with the decks began in the late 80's whilst working for a local radio station where he was given the opportunity to spin his first record.

This love firmly in place the move to London followed in 1998. In 1999 he started djing professionally as Jay OM and since then has been rocking the crowds at many of the biggest venues in London as well as outdoor parties in the UK, Europe, South America & South Africa.

In 2003 he studied Sound Engineering and Music Technology and began solo production under the name Journey. In 2009 started a progressive project under the name Omsphere and in 2011 a collaboration project with Ralph K under the name Crocodile Rangers

In 2004, he conceived the vision of a network of like-minded artists in the psy-trance and ambient genres, all working to promote themselves and each other under one banner. Thus the Free-Spirit label was born. .. Originally intended to focus on artist management, the label's skyrocketing success combined with the enthusiasm of Jay, the artists, and fans enabled Free-Spirit to outgrow its horizons. Free-Spirit continues to build a collective of artists and djs from around the globe, aiming to create and provide access to a combined set of resources not available to them as individuals, making it just a little easier for all to concentrate on what they truly love, which is the music!

Attack on Cole leads former sailor to develop green jobs program

Elizabeth Perez-Halperin vividly remembers Oct. 12, 2000, as ?the day that changed my life forever.?

That was when terrorists blew a hole in the U.S. destroyer Cole docked off Yemen, killing 17 sailors. One of those victims was her closest friend from Navy boot camp, Lakiba Nicole Palmer of San Diego.

The attack, coupled with her growing belief that America?s demand for oil helps fund terrorists and their allies, has committed Perez-Halperin to new missions since she left the Navy in 2005.

Now 33, Perez-Halperin has launched a San Diego-based startup company called GC Green that secures funding from public and private sources to train and connect veterans to jobs in the green energy field. For example, filling a need for energy auditors to help homeowners save on utility bills.

Palmer continues to motivate her effort.

?She has to live beyond that day,? Perez-Halperin said.

Perez-Halperin also champions energy security by promoting alternatives to oil. That?s what brought her to Sacramento recently to urge the California Air Resources Board to continue a controversial regulation aimed at forcing oil companies to reduce the carbon content in transportation fuels.

It was brief, but riveting testimony about the loss of her friend and her own father, a veteran of the first Gulf War.

?You can imagine the frustration that I and so many others felt when we learned that our addiction to oil was helping to fund the very same terrorist organization that had attacked the USS Cole,? she said, pausing to compose herself.

Some veterans don?t see it that way. Willie Galvan, a retired Korean War-era veteran and state commander of the nonprofit American GI Forum of California, wrote a recent column critical of the air board, arguing that more regulations put the country?s energy security and businesses at further risk, especially with the economy so wobbly.

?There are those who imply that the only threat to adequate energy supplies is reliance on imported crude. But they conveniently neglect to consider that California?s regulatory structure has increasingly been the cause of declining in-state production and rising imports,? Galvan wrote.

?As for replacing fossil fuels with alternatives, the reality is they are neither sufficiently available or competitively priced,? he wrote.

Perez-Halperin and others say their primary fears are imports from countries friendly to terrorists and the risk of future war for oil. The long-term solution is to slow those imports by investing in alternative sources, they argue.

Perez-Halperin knows fuel. During her military service she served as an aviation logistics specialist providing combat support for U.S. and NATO forces. In Bahrain and other places she was in charge of transporting and ordering fuel supplies.

?I could not understand why were purchasing fuel from countries that wish us harm. It was a gut check,? she said.

After leaving the Navy, ?I was searching for change and not sure where to find it,? Perez-Halperin said.

She soon discovered her calling.

?I wanted to address the environment, energy and veterans,? she explained.

Holiday greetings to State Journal-Register community

On behalf of all the employees at The State Journal-Register and our newspaper carriers who do an amazing job delivering your paper every day, I would like to extend my warmest wishes for a safe and happy holiday season to the entire SJ-R community.

As we celebrate and close out 2011, we should give thanks and a warm welcome home to the local men and women who have served overseas and will get to spend Christmas with their families this year. For those whose service will continue to keep them away from family and friends during the holidays, you are in our hearts and prayers. May you keep safe and quickly return home. Thank you for keeping us safe and ensuring the freedoms we sometimes take for granted.

Once again, a special thanks to all the volunteers, business partners who contribute their products, services and facilities, and to the many individuals and organizations for their cash donations that raised more than $250,400 for Friend-In-Deed this year. Springfield continues to show a tremendous heart and giving spirit that symbolizes what this time of year is all about. My family and I are honored to be a part of it.?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

University scholars enhancing sex archive

PHILADELPHIA ? The Widener University scholars who are amassing a growing archive of materials on human sexuality have an ambitious goal: Bigger than Kinsey?s.

Pun intended.

The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University is, of course, the premier academy for sex and gender research. But now Widener, based in Chester, Pa., is striving to become a major center of sexuality studies, expanding its master?s and doctoral programs and attracting students from across the country and around the world.

"The work of our faculty and graduates positively affects public health and well-being across the globe," Widener president James Harris III said. "While other programs have collapsed due to a lack of support, our program has grown in degree offerings and number of students, attracting the best and brightest."

The school celebrated the recent opening of the archive, in the Wolfgram Memorial Library, by hosting a series of provocative speakers under the heading "Sex in the Library." (Tagline: "We?re doing it all week long.") Topics ranged from teen sexting to "gender outlaws" for whom male-or-female is an insufficient choice.

The rectangular fourth-floor repository is tucked between a quiet study area and the dense racks of children?s books used by students studying to become teachers.

What?s in it? Posters from 1970s porn films. X-rated movies. Doctors? waiting-room pamphlets from the 1940s, in which sex occurred only between white, married, heterosexual couples. A signed galley proof of "The Human Pony," which, trust us, you really don?t want to know about.

"Students can look at these things and see a history of sexuality, of sex education ? the culture, the prejudices, how our attitudes have changed, how have they not changed," said Molly Wolf, the archive founder and curator, and a graduate of the sexuality master?s program.

A particular prize is an original, stapled-together copy of "Our Bodies, Ourselves," which before its huge popularity in the 1970s was called "Women and Their Bodies" and sold for 75 cents.

"It?s a seminal text," Wolf said. "No pun intended."

Awkward jokes and double entendres seem almost mandatory in any discussion of sex ? and that?s fine, she said. It helps lower the tension around the subject.

Widener arranged its sexuality program to encourage immersion, citing studies that show longer exposure makes students more comfortable and open to learning.

Classes are held all day Saturday and Sunday on two weekends so students can complete a semester?s coursework in a four-day marathon, augmented by online instruction and other assignments.

That lure has drawn working students from Austin, Atlanta, San Diego, Seattle, and elsewhere. They fly in at the start of the weekend, and fly out at the end.

"I get calls and e-mails every single day ? ?Can I commute from North Dakota?? " said professor Betsy Crane, the program director.

In three years, the program has grown from 130 to 212 students. Full-time faculty has increased from two to six in four years.

Full-time students can complete a master?s degree in two years, and a doctorate in a minimum of five years, which is typical at U.S. colleges.

Widener scholars explore not just the function of the body and the desires of the brain, but the impact on sexual behavior of chronic illness, trauma, social norms, and cultural expectations, examining how sexuality seeps into everything from government to religion.

There?s no area of human life "that on one hand is more capable of joy and connection, and on the other hand is so often associated with violence and pain and suffering," Crane said.

For graduates, the rise of sexually transmitted disease, calls for same-sex marriage, greater awareness of sexual abuse, and the battle over birth control and abortion have created employment opportunities. They find jobs not only in teaching but in criminology, social services, counseling, and health.

One graduate, sex therapist Tiffanie Davis-Henry, is a frequent guest on the television show "The View," and was recently named co-host of a new ABC self-help program, "The Revolution"

Ryan McKee, 33, a doctoral student, became interested in social movements such as civil rights and gay rights while earning a master?s degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. But it was a class on human sexuality, he found, that connected those issues and spurred him toward a Ph.D.

At Widener, he has found "professors and colleagues that are incredibly supportive, and a university that?s incredibly supportive. It?s a subject that in many programs gets dumped on the person who teaches abnormal psychology, or addictions, but here we?ve developed a really supportive environment for training professionals."

Widener was his first choice for a doctorate. In fact, it was his only choice.

In recent years, financial pressures have pushed colleges to merge stand-alone sexuality programs into medical-school curriculums or psychology departments. With the merger of a University of Sydney program, Widener officials believe they offer one of a very few, if not the only, fully accredited, university-based doctoral programs.

Lions rout Chargers 38-10 to clinch playoff spot (AP)

DETROIT ? After a decade of losing, the Detroit Lions are in the playoffs.

And they made sure the San Diego Chargers are out.

With their fans chanting "PLAYOFFS" for the final minutes, Detroit got there for the first time since 1999 after Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes in the first half to beat the Chargers 38-10 Saturday.

The Lions (10-5) have won three straight after a seven-game slump to earn a wild-card spot in the playoffs, turning around their franchise after the NFL's only 0-16 season just three years ago.

Following the game, coach Jim Schwartz and his players did a victory lap at Ford Field, high-fiving fans in the front row.

"There's going to be a time that we don't celebrate getting to the playoffs, but it's not going to be tonight," Schwartz said. "It's been a long time coming."

No one has been waiting longer than owner William Clay Ford.

Ford, whose first season leading the franchise was in 1964, was handed a keepsake in the jubilant locker room.

"We gave him the game ball," said center Dominic Raiola, who endured a string of miserable seasons after Detroit drafted him in 2001.

After Raiola's postgame news conference, he gave Stafford a bear hug.

"I'm excited for them, more than for myself and some of the other young guys," the 22-year-old Stafford said.

According to the Chargers (7-8), they will not be in the postseason for a second straight year after making it five times in a six-season stretch. And that might cost coach Norv Turner his job.

"I've been concentrating every week as well as I can on getting this team ready to play and doing the things we need to do," Turner said. "We all know that's something that's discussed at the end of the year."

Knowing they could move into the postseason simply by winning, the Lions held San Diego scoreless until midway through the third quarter, when Philip Rivers threw an 11-yard pass to Malcom Floyd to make it 24-7.

Detroit, though, closed strong to restore the rout.

The Lions and the Buffalo Bills started the season with the league's longest playoff droughts at 11 seasons. Detroit hasn't been in the playoffs since Barry Sanders was its star running back and its drought is over because a decades-long search for a franchise quarterback ended with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft. Coming off the league's only 0-16 season, Detroit selected Stafford and kept him healthy for the first time this season.

Stafford was almost perfect in the first half against San Diego, completing 21 of 26 passes for 260 yards with three TDs. He capped the first drive with a 7-yard pass to Brandon Pettigrew, threw a 3-yarder to Kevin Smith in the second quarter and connected with Calvin Johnson from 14 yards just before halftime to give the Lions a 24-0 lead.

Stafford finished with 373 yards passing to give him 4,518 this year, breaking Scott Mitchell's single-season team record from 1995. Perhaps not coincidently, that season marked the last time the Lions had double digits in wins.

The Lions will go for their 11th victory and to improve their playoff positioning, perhaps to draw the NFC East winner, on Jan. 1 against Green Bay, who they haven't beaten on the road since 1991.

The Chargers needed to extend their winning streak to four games to keep their postseason hopes alive, but the loss and Cincinnati's victory dashed them.

Eric Weddle recovered an onside kick after San Diego finally scored in the third quarter, but the Chargers stalled inside the Lions 5. Cornerback Chris Houston broke up a pass in the end zone and the Chargers had to settle for Nick Novak's field goal and a 14-point deficit.

Detroit's potent offense got the ball for the first time in the second half with 4:53 left in the third quarter and quickly gained 48 yards on passes to Nate Burleson and Johnson. Smith had a 4-yard run for a 6-yard TD and a 31-10 lead.

The Chargers then drove to the Detroit 2 and turned over the ball on downs, firing up its sideline and the fans who have been waiting a long time for a season like this one. It's the first time the Lions made the playoffs since Ford Field opened in 2002.

Rivers was 28 of 53 for 299 yards with a too-late TD and two interceptions, the second of which defensive end Cliff Avril snagged with his right hand and returned 4 yards to make it 38-10 late in the game.

Antonio Gates had four receptions to give him 588 in his career, breaking the Chargers record of 586 set by Hall of Famer Charlie Joiner.

Detroit got off to a good start, lobbing a pass into double coverage to Johnson for a 46-yard gain on the first snap and converting a third down for a TD.

Stafford found Pettigrew open in the end zone for a 7-yard throw, taking advantage of the Chargers assigning two defensive backs to Johnson on the same side of the field.

San Diego, meanwhile, didn't score on its opening possession for the first time in eight games and finished with just 10 points ? not nearly enough to keep up with the Stafford-led Lions.

Physicist builds Lego Large Hadron Collider (Yahoo! News)

9,500 piece model took Copenhagen-based researcher weeks to construct

As scientists at the CERN?Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland?continue their search for the elusive Higgs boson "God particle," one physicist has built a tribute to their work entirely out of?Lego bricks. Sascha Mehlhase, a researcher at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, spent more than 80 hours designing and constructing a model of the supercollider's intricate?ATLAS detector.

Mehlhase, who is part of the institute's high energy physics group, spent about 48 hours modeling the ATLAS on his laptop in Lego's?Digital Designer software. He used the application's ability to generate a custom construction manual, but decided to simply eyeball most of the work after seeing the 4,500-page tome it spit out. With some help from his wife, Mehlhase spent 33 hours over the course of several weeks assembling 9,500 bricks to reproduce even the smallest details.

The final model stands nearly two feet tall and is 1:50 scale ? or actual size, if you're a little Lego person. In fact, Mehlhase even chose jumpsuit-wearing Lego minifigs to represent the CERN scientists and recreated the passageways they use to access the inner areas of the ATLAS experiment. The total cost for the project was almost $2,600 in Lego bricks, which had to be custom ordered from the Danish toymaker.

Mehlhase hopes to eventually publish a construction manual online and intends to showcase the finished model at the Niels Bohr Institute for visitors and students to marvel at. You can see more images of it at?the University of Copenhagen's site.

Argentine govt economist's mysterious death probed (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? Uruguayan investigators are examinining the cell phones and computer of a high-ranking Argentine government economist, seeking a motive for his apparent suicide during an international summit.

A hotel maid found Ivan Heyn's body during the Mercosur summit on Tuesday. Police say he had apparently just taken a shower and that his belt had choked off his air supply, but there were no signs of violence and no suicide note was found.

President Cristina Fernandez said Wednesday that the 34-year-old deputy foreign commerce secretary was like a son, and that word of his death left her feeling unable to breathe.

Heyn was a friend of Maximiliano Kirchner, the president's son.

(AP Photo/Susan Walsh, file)

(AP) ? Former Fannie Mae CEO Daniel Mudd announced he would take a leave of absence from the hedge fund he runs Wednesday, less than a week after being charged in connection with the 2008 financial crisis.

Mudd is one of six former executives at Fannie, the Federal National Mortgage Association, and Freddie Mac, facing civil fraud charges from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The executives are accused of understating the level of high-risk subprime mortgages that Fannie Freddie held just before the housing bubble burst.

Fannie and Freddie have cost taxpayers more than $150 billion to date ? the largest bailout of the financial crisis. Regulators say that tab could hit $259 billion.

The companies have since essentially become wards of the state.

Legal experts say they don't expect the executives to face criminal charges, however, the SEC took action amid widespread criticism that no one was being held accountable for a financial crisis that reached across the globe.

The SEC has agreed not to charge Fannie and Freddie. The companies, taken over in 2008, have agreed to cooperate in the case against the former executives.

Randal Nardone, principal and co-founder of the hedge fund, Fortress Investment Group, will serve as interim CEO in Mudd's absence.

"I have requested a leave of absence from my position as chief executive officer to ensure that any time or attention I need to focus on matters outside of Fortress will not affect the business or operations of the company," Mudd said.

Mudd, 53, was leading the mortgage giant in 2007 when it became clear that the housing market began to disintegrate.

Investigators say that executives at the Fannie and Freddie mislead the public, and investors, in congressional testimony, as well as in reports and speeches.

Fannie Make was established by the government in the 1930s to encourage homeownership by buying mortgages from banks. That freed cash for the banks so they could make new loans.
