No everyone knew he was crazy, he was more of a town joke. But he did issue his own money that people in San Fransisco accepted, his uniform was donated by the local militia and when he died there was a large funeral.
It's funny that he also issued a letter to congress informing them they were abolished and barred them from assembling in Washington. I don't know if what the US congress said about it when they read the letter.
