William Byrd's streak of hiring a former Division I women's player to coach its girls basketball team has ended at two.
Byrd has hired 2005 alumnus Brad Greenway to take over the girls program, replacing Tiffany Sardin, who resigned in May after two years in the position.
Sardin played at the University of Virginia and is a former team captain with the Cavaliers. Byrd's previous girls head coach was former Virginia Tech guard Fran Recchia.
Byrd posted a 17-29 overall record and was 9-9 in Blue Ridge District games in Sardin's two seasons. Byrd was 8-16 last season, losing to Staunton River in the semifinals of the Blue Ridge tournament.
The Terriers have not had a winning season since 2005-06 when current University of Richmond women's assistant Mike McGuire held the job.
Greenway, 25, is a former boys basketball and baseball player at Byrd, where he ranks No. 3 on the school's career list for batting average.
Greenway was the boys junior varsity basketball coach last winter at Northside, serving on the Vikings staff directed by Bill Pope. He also was Northside's middle school football coach for one season.
This spring, Greenway was the JV baseball coach at Byrd.
"I think he's ready for it," Pope said. "One of the things you want is someone who wants to take on responsibility. I found a maturity with him in his understanding of things."
He was a varsity assistant at Christiansburg in 2010-11, helping the Blue Demons to the VHSL Group AA Division 4 semifinals.
Greenway began his coaching career as an assistant baseball coach at Eastern Montgomery in the 2009-10 season.
"He wants to coach," Pope said. "He's coaching all the time. His desire was to run a program. I don't think he saw this coming, but when this came open he called and talked to me about it.
"I'm excited for him. He's a good guy."
